How did you learn about Reboot with Joe?
My wife was skimming the documentary list on Crackle one night in December 2013. She stumbled upon FSND and was blown away by Joe and Phil’s story. She immediately told me the next morning and we watched it together.
What inspired you to do a Reboot?
Joe Cross and Phil Staples. What these two guys overcame was incredible in my eyes. I was in a time in my life where I was depressed about our situation. My wife and I were in a car accident in 2010, still injured 4 years later, it was time for a change. Something had to be done. Pills didn’t solve anything. Surgery almost killed my wife. She had to be on life support for 12 hours after her lung collapsed. Then having to go back 4 months later to have the surgery. In pain, depressed, financially depleted, and with a lawsuit against the at fault driver, we were looking for something that would help us. We were both overweight as well. And not just overweight, obese. My wife topping around 300 lbs/136 kg and myself at my heaviest, before I stopped getting on the scale, 270 lbs/122 kg. What we saw that day has changed our lives forever.
How did the experience go for you?
The experience has been great and I would do it all over again in a heartbeat. My detox period was a nightmare but that was my body telling me that I treated it like garbage for a long time and now you are going to suffer a little while I get this all out. That is the way I like to describe it.
How much weight did you lose (even if that wasn’t your goal!)?
To date I have lost 85 lbs/39 kg. In the first 50 days I lost 50 lbs/23 kg.
Did you have any notable health or physical improvements?
My blood pressure issues resolved within days. I had to stop my BP medication after passing out a few times. At that point I knew the juice was starting to do what so many claimed. My BP has been the best ever, 116/78 and is steady. I have had acid reflux since I was a teenager. I have stopped taking medication and no longer have extreme heartburn. I would like to thank the 2 – 3 L of cola I used to drink on a daily basis to have a lot of play in the amount of heartburn I used to have. Since juicing, and becoming vegan, no more stomach issues. The mental clarity that I have gained from this has been astonishing. Focusing has always been something I have struggled with. Having anxiety and ADHD is never pleasant and I always tried to hide it. I feel more relaxed, able to deal with pressure and my thought process has improved. I have eczema as well which clears up. I do have flare ups from time to time which generally means I have been laying off the green juice :). I also have a skin condition called Keratosis Pilaris and have had it since birth. It has cleared up drastically leaving only small red dots, instead of red white dots. The pain in my hip and leg started to decrease and I was able to start exercise and running and with more juicing the pain eventually went away. I have zero pain today. I ran a half marathon on April 9th, 2014, for a fundraiser and ran 13.34 miles. In that I also did some stair climbing. My strength has improved so much that I am doing 2 half marathons in May 2014.
What was the toughest part about the Reboot experience?
The toughest part of my Reboot was the first week. After the detox period was over, I knew this is what we needed to do to get our health and life back. Every day I felt like quitting I thought of why I started. We were in pain, our health had deteriorated, and we were fat and miserable. I have two children, a daughter turning 4 in July and a son who will be 2 in September. My kids mean everything to me. When you can’t bend over for a few minutes to play with your kids because you are in extreme pain and are getting too big to do certain things with them you have to make a choice. Do you want to continue this life or do you want to make a positive change?
What habits have you maintained and kept a part of your everyday life?
JUICING JUICING JUICING.
I have also started running. As part of the juicing and gaining this massive amount of energy I started to rehab my injury to gain strength. With the amount of ginger I have been taking in I have zero issues with inflammation in my hip or right leg whatsoever. I quit smoking as well and wanted to make it up to my lungs by running. It is a love now. Thanks to Brian Robertson, Shane Whaley and Neil Martin for sharing their success stories and introducing me to something I would have never thought I would do. Brian has become a great friend of mine and we talk every day.
What is your lasting impression of the Reboot experience?
I have never been one to have a hero. Most people grow up and their heroes are superheroes or sport athletes or their parents. I didn’t have those thoughts, I liked superheroes and sports athletes. Especially hockey. My father was abusive and we really didn’t see eye to eye. So I never had a hero until I met Joe. When Joe stopped in Toronto on February 25th, 2014 on his book tour, I had seen the same guy that everyone sees in the movie, interviews, radio. He is the same genuine guy that wants to help people. When Joe remembered my face from a YouTube video I did for our juicing group I was amazed. This is when Joe Cross became my hero. My lasting impression of my Reboot experience is I got my life back, my marriage is stronger than ever, my kids are enjoying juice now and getting healthy and we wouldn’t trade it in for the world. Cheers!
