Flourless & Vegan Tahini Brownies

Tahini is a smooth paste made of sesame seeds (just like almond butter is made of almonds), traditionally used in savory Mediterranean dishes like hummus. But this paste, full of healthy fats, vitamins and minerals, can also be used for baking to make these fudgy brownies that are naturally gluten-free, grain-free and vegan.

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon ground flaxseed or chia seed
  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/3 cup coconut sugar (or organic cane sugar)
  • 3/4 cup tahini
  • 1/2 cup dairy-free dark chocolate chips

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350F and line a 9 x 9″ baking pan with parchment paper. In a large bowl, combine flax or chia with 3 tablespoons warm water. Stir together and allow the mixture to thicken for a few minutes.
  2. Next, add the salt, baking soda, maple syrup, vanilla extract, cocoa powder and sugar to the bowl. Whisk together the ingredients to combine.
  3. Now, stir in the tahini and mix well. You will have a thick and sticky batter. Gently fold in the chocolate chips and transfer the batter to the baking dish. Spread evenly.
  4. Bake in the oven for about 30 minutes. Allow them to cool for at least 10 minutes before serving.

Note: The longer these brownies cool, the better they will hold together.
