Why I Rebooted: To lose weight and recover after a hit-and-run accident

I made juicing a habit after watching “Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead” back in 2013. That summer and fall, I had done a triathlon, a marathon, and a half marathon. I was feeling great.

But everything changed that November, when I was in a hit-and-run car accident. It left me with a herniated disc in my low back.

Three surgeries later, I was still a mess

I was in so much pain and discomfort before my spine surgery in July of 2014. It was hard to walk, work, and sleep. I was a mess. I ended up having two more spine surgeries in December of 2015.

I developed high blood pressure, was drinking too much, and was dealing with anxiety and depression from my back. I felt stuck. There are a lot of things in life we can’t control, and it was disheartening to me to have my body “let me down.”

Birthday party photos were my wake-up call

Every year I have a big birthday party. Who doesn’t like a party, right? I was celebrating my 31st birthday, and by then I had ballooned up to 235.5 pounds. When I looked back at photos of past birthdays, I knew I had to change.

The key was in changing both my thoughts and habits

I had to stop comparing myself to what I was like before the accident. I had to stop shaming myself and start implementing new habits. A big part of those habits was juicing.

I watched “Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead” and “Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead 2”—which really inspired me to change. I initially did a 10-Day Reboot plan, and then a 30-Day plan. I read The Reboot With Joe Juice Diet book and also utilized the Juice Diet app to help track.

I remembered how great I felt juicing. I incorporated juicing along with cutting out processed food and sugar, and I kept alcohol consumption to a few days a week. I realized all those glasses of wine I was having during dinner were simply out of habit.

I also started moving again, incorporating various cardio and kettlebell exercises.

Rebooting and juicing is part of my healthy new life

I juice either once or twice a day now—in the morning and with my evening meal. Sometimes I will do a day of just juice.

During my recent 12-day trip to Maui, I was able to find a local natural food market and get my daily juices while on holiday.

I was the most active on this trip that I’ve ever been. I ran the Day of Hope 10K race! And I came back from my vacation feeling revitalized.

Since February, I haven’t gained a pound. I have either lost weight or stayed at a plateau.

My energy is sky high and I’m active again

I did two triathlons this year. An international distance in August and sprint distance in September.

I also did a Thanksgiving 5K race with a friend. Between the two of us, we have lost around 100 pounds.* It was our celebratory race to vitality and health.

People and clients keep telling me I look good. My response is always the same, that I feel really great! My energy is back, my skin is clearer, and I almost find my body craves micronutrients from fresh juice.

What I wish someone told me so I’d start sooner

I haven’t been on any pain medications, steroids, blood pressure medication for some time now. The best part is I have had zero back pain since I started taking back my health in February. My doctor said I’m an inspiration.
