How to GET Motivated & STAY Motivated

Coming to you from the busy streets of Hong Kong this week to bring you the twelfth consecutive Ask Joe Anything. The weather is beautiful here so I hope wherever you are has some sunshine too. This week’s question is one I receive quite often — it’s all about motivation. How do you get motivated and STAY motivated?

I try to use the time machine that we’ve all got. To me, the day that I looked in the mirror at 40 years of age and 320 pounds and loaded on medication, I was wondering how did I get here at age 40 when 20 years ago, I was fit, healthy and invincible basically. So I went out to age 60 in my mind and thought, how am I going to be then? Bottom line, I was scared, I was frightened and maybe I wasn’t even going to make 60. So I use that time machine, to travel forward and think about the choices that I make today, and how they will lay out and plan for what I’m going to be like in the future.

So, what I try to do is think about getting more plant food into my life every day. I’m kind of like the 80/20 rule; about 80% of the time I’m pretty good, 20% of the time, forget about it, I’m not good at all. But what I try not to do is beat myself up and focus on those times when I haven’t hit what I need to do. I try to focus on those positive times.  If you have a look at my new book, Reboot with Joe: Fully Charged, you’ll see that one of the seven keys is about being kind to yourself, respecting yourself, and loving yourself, and if you can give yourself a break and not be so hard on yourself, then it’s possible to actually get more motivated and be positive.

I use a little bit of scare tactics...I want to be able to be in my 90’s or even in my 100’s playing singles tennis. So, that’s the objective, what I do today is going to lay the foundation for what I do tomorrow. And so when there are times I see the chocolate ice cream and I want to do it, I think have I earned it? Have I done enough exercise? Have I had good sleep? And have I consumed plenty of plants? That’s how I try to do the motivation.
