Fruits & Veggies: Frozen vs. Fresh

Which is better, fresh or frozen fruits and veggies?  At first it’s easy to see why fresh food makes the most sense but what if you want a specific ingredient that’s out of season or hard to find where you live?  While eating locally and in season is ideal from a nutritional and cost standpoint, there are times where you simply want something that’s out of season, like berries in your morning smoothie. When produce is out of season, choosing frozen can mean getting more nutrients from your fruits compared to fresh.  The elements that can reduce nutrient levels in produce include: – Time since harvest – Exposure to heat, light or oxygen Since frozen fruits and veggies are frozen ... ADHD and Diet: Why Colorful Plant Foods May Make a Difference

One out of every 20 children is diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in the United States. ADHD is a serious condition that can make children more at risk for developing issues with depression, anxiety and difficulty in school or work. Many parents are concerned about the long-term use of medication and related side effects in their children, and are seeking lifestyle changes to reduce the need or complement the effects of medications. Can a restricted or enhanced diet make a difference? A link between diet and ADHD has been suspected and studied for decades. New research suggests that avoiding certain artificial or processed ingredients, supplementing nutrients to correct deficiencies, eating a well-balanced, healthy diet and limiting refined carbohydrate ... A Glowing Study. Fruit and Vegetables Can Make Us More Attractive!

We have all heard the expression, you are what you eat and now we know; we also look like what we eat! A small study from the University of St Andrews in Scotland showed the groups that consumed just 3 extra serves of carotenoid containing fruits and vegetables showed a small change in their skin tones and colouration in just 6 weeks. The small change was enough to be perceived as more attractive to others. The group that ate more processed junk food became less attractive and paler in the study period. What they discovered was eating fruits and vegetables with carotenoids will increase the yellow and red tones in the skin giving us a more attractive glow. The ... Continue

Long Live Veggies! – Extend the Life of Your Produce

One of the biggest challenges of Rebooting can be procuring enough produce. It can be tough to fit in lots of grocery trips, and is definitely frustrating when your veggies go bad before you use them. Hey, no one likes a floppy carrot or a wilted kale leaf!   Shop farmers markets when possible – These vegetables are some of the freshest you can find. They haven’t spent time being washed in a factory, or shipped on a truck across the country, this time saved can translate into longer shelf-life for the end-user.   Look into a CSA (www.localharvest.org) – Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is another way for people to buy local, seasonal food directly from a farmer – ... Champion Your Challenge

Deciding to do a Reboot is like taking on a delicious challenge. And like any good challenge, sticking with the goal is rarely easy and (gulp) not even always “fun.” But from the moment we take our first steps to the moment we cross the finish line we know we are doing our body, mind, and (dare I say it?) soul a monumental service.   The most difficult step is almost always the first one we make. So what’s the best way to set ourselves up for Reboot success?   Have a Measurable Goal. This could be a number of days, target weight, quantity of juices, etc. The key ingredient for success is that the goal can be quantified. ... Continue

Spring is almost here and what better way to celebrate than with a delicious and nutritious salad? Here’s some tips for getting the most out of your meal:   Combine: Why stick to one kind lettuce when there are so many incredible greens to choose from? Try combining a milder/lighter lettuce or green like Boston, Bibb, or endive, with a crisp lettuce or green like romaine, and a peppery/sharper tasting green like arugula or radicchio.   Color: Make a game of seeing how many colors of the rainbow you can fit into one salad! Try red, yellow, or green peppers, tomatoes, carrots, broccoli, cucumbers, and fruits like blueberries, raspberries, apples, and tangerines   Crunch: Add veggies like jicama, celery, ... Continue

Kid Friendly Veggies

Being a nutritionist means I know the importance of my children eating a variety of fruits and veggies. But having them actually do it can sometimes be tricky as I’m sure many of you moms and dads out there can relate to. While I do sneak all sorts of healthy goodies into recipes like tomato sauce, smoothies, fresh juice and soups, I still want my kids to grow up knowing they are eating fresh produce, recognizing these foods and ultimately choosing to eat them. Better yet, I want them to know where their vegetables come from and how they end up on our grocery store shelves.   When my six-year-old was younger he would eat just about every fruit and ...
