Protein & The Reboot – Setting The Record Straight

Have you wondered, “Will I get enough protein during my Reboot?” Have friends, family, trainers, and others shared their concerns with your plans to juice, “But you won’t be getting enough protein!!!” Feeling confused or worried? Think this whole protein issue is being blown out of proportion?
Let’s set the record straight.
What is protein?
Protein is an important nutrient, made up of individual “building blocks,” known as amino acids. There are 9 essential amino acids, meaning that we must get these nutrients from food, our bodies can not construct them out of other nutrients in our diet. Animal sources of protein contain all 9 of these essential amino acids and are called “complete” proteins. Many vegetables have some but not all 9 amino acids and are called, “incomplete” proteins. There are, however, many excellent plant-based foods that are complete proteins.
The scientific belief used to be that incomplete proteins had to be combined and eaten at the same meal to create a complete protein – like beans and rice. Science has debunked this rigid notion, making vegetarian meal planning much simpler. The goal is to consume a wide variety of plants day to day to naturally match up incomplete proteins over the course of a few days, to create complete proteins. This will provide all the necessary building blocks in a timely fashion for the body to work with.
Why is protein important?
Proteins play many important roles to keep us well.
Here are a few examples:
– Hunger and fullness regulation
– Maintaining and building muscle mass
– Fluid balance
– Regulating blood sugar
– Helping reduce reflux
They are also the building blocks for creating:
– Immune factors
– Enzymes
– Hormones
– Skin, hair, nails and other connective tissues
– Transports for absorbing and distributing other nutrients
How much protein do I need to eat?
The amount of protein needed to maintain optimal health is different for everyone and can even be different for the same person at different times depending on the situation or context. There is also a range of protein that is best, not an absolute number. In our “meat ‘n potatoes” focused society, the average American consumes far more protein than is required for health. Yet, inadequate protein intake is risky and can lead to many complications including severe malnutrition (think of the swollen bellies in starving children) or an increased likelihood for catching a virus. You may find many methods for calculating protein needs online or in books, but to know your numbers it is best to ask a qualified professional.
Which plant-based foods have the most protein?
Examples of plant based complete proteins include: amaranth, buckwheat, chia seeds, hemp seed, quinoa, soybeans, spirulina.
Examples of high protein Reboot-friendly plants include: kale and other dark green leafys, broccoli, celery, corn, and avocado.
Will I get enough protein during my Reboot?
Clinically speaking, it is highly unlikely a healthy person will develop a protein deficiency in the time frame of the posted Reboot programs (5-15 days).
Green juices in particular are rather rich in protein, making them a cornerstone of any Reboot program. The amount of vegetables eaten during the Reboot for those who are eating + juicing, helps bump up the amount of protein an individual will consume in a day during their program.
Can I add protein powders during a Reboot?
If you feel you need more protein it is OK to include protein rich additives in your juice, as desired. It may not be necessary, but the Reboot is meant to be deeply personal and we support everyone’s choices when it comes to creating what works best.
Examples of situations where you may wish to add more protein to your juices include:
-Frequent or intense exercise
-Diabetes, pre-diabetes, insulin resistance, PCOS or other blood sugar regulation needs
-Hunger control issues that persist well into the Reboot, after increasing the amounts of juice and water consumed
Ideas for Reboot friendly additives to juice
-Chia seeds
-Hemp seed powder
-Ground flax seeds
-Spirulina
-Pea protein powder
I’m concerned about losing muscle mass during my Reboot.
Consuming protein rich vegetables and juices can help to maintain muscle mass while you are Rebooting. Walking and doing light weights can also help to preserve muscle mass. Juice and plant foods provide a big boost of nutrient dense meals and snacks so that overall nourishment is generally maintained during your Reboot. Not everyone loses a lot of muscle, even with a large amount of body weight lost during their Reboot. For example, Joe’s 100 pound weight loss during his 60 day reboot we saw in Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead, was 70% body fat and 30% muscle.
We would love to hear your thoughts on this hot topic!

I’ve been using a 1/2 teaspoon of Braggs liquid aminos in my juicer once a day, just in case I don’t get enough protein through my food sources. How do you feel about this? Good idea? Bad idea?
Hi Tina – yes that’s a great idea. Hope your reboot is going great!
I was reading your article about protein needs and noticed that PCOS is listed as reason for needing more protein. Can you expand on that and tell me how I can get more info. Loosing weight has been such a struggle for me and I have made it 23 days and lost 21 lbs near the end I just got so hungry I went off, perhaps I just need to add some plant protien sources to my juices? I still need to loose 40 lbs.
Hi Colleen, great question! With PCOS there are hormonal issues that can cause disturbances in blood sugar, kind of like diabetes, so having some extra protein can help to keep your levels stable and also curb cravings plus benefit metabolism. Try adding some protein to your juices — great job with making it 23 days!!! That is really fantastic and congrats on your weight loss. Going forward, including fresh juice daily and eating a plant based diet can help with weight loss – you don’t have to just juice. Best to you and let us know if you have any ?s
Hmmm, my thought that it would be better to use any of the protein sources Stacy mentions rather than Braggs. The amt you’re taking is an insufficient protein supply, but it introduces acidity during a period (juice cleansing) when you want to bet the body alkaline.

Protein & The Reboot, a common question! Reboot Nutritionist Stacy K. sets the record straight. http://t.co/Q96I9L2g
Hey Stacy, I’m glad you addressed this.
I’m a long-time detox cleanser and faster and the protein issue is typically on my mind. I do resistance training and don’t want to lose hard-earned muscle.
Of course you could supplement with (my usual) whey protein powder but that introduces alkalinity into a cleanse which, in part, is about getting alkaline.
So, veg-based sources such as pea and hemp protein powders are the way to go, as you write. And, of course, my fav – spirulina.
Keep up your good work!
-Joe
Thanks Joe!
Thanks, Stacy, I saw someone comment on protein supplementation during a reboot and I can tell you the question’s been with me for days (I was even thinking about it getting ready for work today.) I positively thing the way to go is green/leafy. No need for animal bi-products, even for the groups who want to maintain or grow muscle-mass during the reboot (google: silverback gorilla).i just couldn’t figure out how to explain it without turning it into right/wrong argument. Thanks again!
Whether you drink veggie juice or not this is a great article on getting enough protein…. http://t.co/Y3sTX2i4

How much protein is too much protein? Specifically, what would be a dangerous amount of protein assuming only healthy sources are used?
Hi Dan – great question! The answer however is different for each person and depends on many factors including height, weight, age, activity, health conditions, etc.. Send me your stats and I’m happy to suggest a range that would be healthy and an upper limit.
Thanks Stacey, lots of great information in this post, you’ve even settled the ‘is corn allowed’ debate which I have had with a few people who tell me I shouldn’t juice corn yet I do almost every day. I loved your comment to that rebooting is deeply personal. Sometimes in the forum people set rules and tell others to do this or that is cheating which can be disheartening. So I got quite a lot more out of this article than just the protein issue
…just wish it was possible to subscribe to the comments in a blog post, will this ever be added to the blog section of the site, it would be so helpful.
Hi Sarah, thanks so much! Glad the article was helpful to you. Yes we have discussed adding the feature of subscribing to blog posts too so stay tuned…
I love reading your comments and helpful hints to others in our community forums – thanks!!!
if one has a blood clot in the calf and is taking a baby aspirin as therapy in hope that it will not go to the lungs should they avoid using kale or other types of foods since it helps in clotting blood? I’m not sure since foods do influence the blood. Please advise
Hi Roine – this is a great and very important question. You need to check with your doctor and find out if you have any restrictions on Vitamin K rich foods. Let us know and we can help answer any questions you have about what to include or avoid.
my daughter puts 6 almonds in her juice for protein……is that bad or good?
Sure that’s fine! For just juice fast to rest the bowel then avoid nuts and seeds but there are so many benefits of a modified reboot that includes whole fruits, veggies and even expanding to nuts and seeds that it all really depends on your personal goals.
Hi Tina- I’m gonna start a 60 juice fast- I heard that you don’t get any cholesterol or any fiber from drinking green juice, do I need to eat any nuts or anything else on top of the juice fasting? And also I would like to know if I can make a juice and put it in the fridge and drink it 4 hours later, will it lose any of its nutrition?
Hi LucyMuir – I answered a question like this in the Ask the Nutritionist Forum too – let me know if you can’t find it.
For a short term reboot – like 15 days or less you likely don’t need to add anything else but if you are concerned about any nutrient deficiencies from an underlying condition check with your doctor. Here are tips for juice storage http://www.jointhereboot.com/june-group-reboot-day-2-juicing-on-the-go/
HI Stacy, What are the safe amounts to use on the seeds to obtain enough protein? I do have chia seeds in my cupboard along with sunflower, almonds and walnuts. Also, would juicing them be more beneficial than chewing? This is a wonderful article, as I was wondering the same thing about protein.
for chia seeds, start with 3-6 Tbsp per day (the ones I use say 5 gm protein for 3 Tbsp) — you can use more but they gel up your juice so my advise is to start small
For seeds, you can make almond milk then blend the paste into your smoothies but if you go for just juice skip the nuts and seeds until after your reboot. If you are eating + juicing then 1-2 handfuls per day would be a suggested amount.
http://www.jointhereboot.com/cinnamon-vanilla-almond-milk-recipe-of-the-week/
Enjoy!
Thank you Stacy…I do drink almond milk that is made by Blue Diamond. I haven’t drank any since i have been juicing. Thanks for the link for the cinnamon vanilla almond milk too! Have a great week.
P.S. Forget the Blue Diamond, I am looking forward to making my own now. Fresh!
I am getting ready to start my first 10 fast, and my biggest concern is the amount of protein, so this has been helpful. I try to work out 4-5 times per week for about 2 hours per day with resistance and cardio. Could i get anybody’s feedback on what they would recommend for an easy to use protein, or if i even need one.
Thanks.
Hi Alex, great question! Here is more about exercise and your reboot – check it out and let me know if you have any questions
http://www.jointhereboot.com/fitness-facts-for-your-reboot/
Hi Stacy,
My name is Beth. I just ordered my juicer and I just watched the movie. I am inspired to begin juicing. I have about 70 pounds to lose. I am trying to find the juice recipes that were used during the movie. Is there somewhere that I can find the juices that were used? I found one recipe with kale, celery, cucumber, granny smith apples, lemon and giner root. Thanks
I found the recipes at the bottom of the pages where you can choose a plan. Go to the PLANS and just pick one. Then scroll down to the bottom and you’ll find tons of recipes for juice mixes and variety!
Thanks!!!!!
Hi Beth, congrats on getting your juicer and welcome to reboot!!! Here is the mean green recipe from the film
http://www.jointhereboot.com/mean-green-juice/
I want to start the juicing, but am highly addicted to coffee/caffeine, when I have tried to quit I get horrid migraines that render me helpless for several days. Is there a way to lessen the withdrawal effects of no caffeine?
Hi Kate, here are tips for weaning off caffeine http://www.jointhereboot.com/why-is-caffeine-a-no-no-during-the-reboot/
Let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks! I was also wondering about protein during the fast. I tried the three day and found myself still craving meat. What about soy protein? Is one more “pure”, as far as the suggestions go?
Hi Jen, the protein in soy can be hard for some people to digest, like milk, so for the reboot we recommend other vegetable based choices like pea, hemp, chia, algae/spirulina if you need to add something to your juices. Be sure to boost your juice and water intake – also see if this craving reduces after day 5. And use more veggies vs fruits to help your cravings too. Best to you!
what about whey protein?
Whey may be acidifying in the same way that whey’s source, milk, is.
the reboot is meant to be a time for just plants- fruits and veggies specificially. This is why we suggest a protein powder such as pea, algae/spirulina or chia or hemp seeds as a preference.
Because I lift weights I am concerned about adequate protein. What to do?
Because I lift weights I am concerned about getting adequate protein. What should I do to ensure that I am getting enough?
Hi Dave here are some hints for reboot and exercise

Just saw the movie last nite and excited about doing the juice cleanse/fast. I’m unclear, however, how much juice to drink? Is it whenever you are hungry or is there a set number of juices a day?
Thanks!
Hi Daniella, welcome and so happy you enjoyed the film! We suggest drinking 4-6 juices per day that are 16-20 oz/500-600mL each plus at least 64 oz/2L of water. Feel free to drink your juice at once like a meal or spread out throughout the day like mini meals or snacks – listen to your body’s hunger cues. Enjoy and let us know if you have any questions.
Stacy – I have been juicing since Thursday (down 8.2 lbs) and finding the recipes I like has been helpful. I have read conflicting things about eating vegetables on the fast. Is it ok or not really recommended?
Stacy-Thanks for clarifying the protein issue. I will be starting the fast once I get a juicer. so i am just preparing
Hi Beth, fantastic you are enjoying your reboot and experiencing good results so far! As far as eating vegetables goes, it depends on your goals. You can still gain much in terms of weight loss and wellness from eating veggies + juicing but some prefer the idea of giving their system more of a rest and a fast with just juice. It’s more of a personal choice. Let me know if you have any ?s.
Stacy, do you have a recommendation for a good protein powder to add to my juices? i’m a diabetic and wanted to add a protein powder but don’t won’t to mess up my reboot!
is it ok to warm the juice to have as a soup?
Hi Jessjr – just warm lightly to limit reduction in nutrients – try placing glass of juice in a bowl with warm water. Also, you can make broth from your pulp which is delicious warm or hot as well as hot water with ginger root and lemon. http://www.jointhereboot.com/warm-up-with-juice-pulp-veggie-broth-recipe-of-the-week/ Enjoy!
Thanks for the quick relpy. I’m on day six and yesterday way kind of hard with the hunger. So I thought mentally as a soup it would help. Otherwise I feel real good.
Stacy, I use Chia seeds in my juices, but I find Maca powder helps me a lot also. I don’t see Maca recommended here, so I wanted to clarify. Also, is eating a raw veggie such as a cucumber or a stalk of celery a bad idea?
Thanks!! Your support is much appreciated.
Hi Juila – Maca powder is fine to include and nibbling on cucumber or celery is OK too. Enjoy!
Thanks for the information on protein. I am just starting my juice journey and a friend questioned me regarding getting the appropriate amount of protein. I am going the leafy green route. Thirty days, here I come.
I don’t see them listed on the “approved” veggies list, but are higher protein items like quinoa, beans, and lentils allowed while you’re doing the Reboot?
Hi Amy, these protein sources are excellent for a modified reboot or program like the Juice Until Dinner plan. The reboot is meant to be a time for just fruits, veggies, herbs/spices but modifying it as needed using plant based foods is certainly another option that can be very effective.

I am just learning about this program. I have about 300 food allergies that I’ve maintained largely through rotational diets. One of the issues I have is with protiens, Even protein loading it’s tough for my body to asorb it and I’m almost always “low”. I am allergic to soy-whey-leguimes on a regular basis. I am not talking about intolerance, but a systemic response. I do carry an epi pen for leguimes.
Basically if I eat any food on a regular daily basis, it seems my body will mount a reaction to it.
I want to know if there is enough variety to rotate and that includes protien/ amino acid contianing foods.
I am encouraged since this program seems to help immunity disorders.
Hi aikanae, thank you for the information about your rotational diet and allergies. Here is more info from Claire, our naturopath, that might be helpful. There is a huge amount of variety possible with a reboot so I encourage you to utilize this to your advantage. Have you been tested for heavy metal toxicity like mercury? http://www.jointhereboot.com/reboot-as-an-elimination-diet/
Let us know if you have any questions.
I just completed my first 10 day juice fast. On day 10 I realized that I did not know how to re-integrate food. The last two days I have added smoothies, and some fruit. Would appreciate any suggestions.
Congrats Pam!!! Here are some tips for next steps http://www.jointhereboot.com/after-the-reboot-next-steps-for-transitioning-to-a-healthy-plant-based-diet/
Sounds like you are off to a good start
Hi Stacy,
I have a Vita-Mix blender, and started making green smoothies (greens and fruit combinations) 3 days ago. I feel better already! I would like to use the VIta Mix, rather than spend money on a juicer. It also seems that there are even more health benefits in the pulp. What are your thoughts?
Hi aguthrie, using a blender is another wonderful way to reboot and yes you will reap all the benefits of fiber (the soluble fiber remains in juice but the insoluble is removed). Here is more info about blending vs juicing http://www.jointhereboot.com/the-great-debate-juicing-vs-smoothies/
Enjoy!
Will I blow the whole thing if I include a small portion of really lean animal protein (fish, chicken, turkey) per day?
Hi juicergypsy, we don’t advise animal foods as part of a full reboot but many people have made modifications and felt very well so the choice is yours – the main goal of the reboot is to ingest many more fruits, vegetables and avoiding junk foods. If you do include these foods here are some guidelines for better quality http://www.jointhereboot.com/?s=simple+eating+guidelines http://www.jointhereboot.com/after-the-reboot-next-steps-for-transitioning-to-a-healthy-plant-based-diet/ Enjoy!
Hi Stacy! I am 29f dx stage 3 breast cancer 12/11. Just had a masectomy on July 5. All results showed no evidence of cancer. Now reconstruction is in Sept. I am planning on starting tomorrow. Should I worry about my protein intake?
Hi ebrown11 – how wonderful your test results show you are cancer free! Increasing your intake of fruits and vegetables is an important part of suvivorship promotion. It is important to get enough protein before and after surgery to promote recovery and maintain the health of your immune system. I would suggest you pay close attention to get adequate protein during this time as well as many plant foods. Wishing you all the best!
really falling in love with this site!!!
i have a question a friend of mine is talking about being a lifetime juicer…. is this a good idea to only live on juice? i always thought it was a more of a temp. diet thing
I have a different situation and need your expertise on this. Have a 10 year gastric pouch surgery done, 4 years ago a large kevlar abdominal mesh placed for 4 hernias, and now have developed a colitis problem with vitamin deficency issues. I don’t know if I am a candidate for the reboot, but would definetely like to try. What is your suggestions on this matter and how I might do this?
Thank you
Hi ScooterMama, I think the best way for you to go about a full or modified reboot is to work with a nutritionist and your doctor to identify any potential or current nutrient deficiencies so that you can adjust your reboot plan accordingly. Feel free to reach back out with more details as you have them or pass along my info to them if they have questions about the reboot.
Is the original fast (7-60 days) considered a reboot? I am on day two and wondering if I can add the above proteins to my juice if I feel the need for more protein based upon your criteria:
-Frequent or intense exercise
-Diabetes, pre-diabetes, insulin resistance, PCOS or other blood sugar regulation needs
-Hunger control issues that persist well into the Reboot, after increasing the amounts of juice and water consumed.
Hi persuaded1 – yes you can absolutely add more protein if you feel you need it. I would suggest trying to hold out a few days unless you meet the first 2 on the list… your energy will tend to be lower on day 2 then start to pick up sometime between days 3-5 in many cases, although everyone’s experience is different. Try to first increase juice and water, rest more and then see how you feel.
During this reboot process, can I still stick with my Whey protein powder? My body needs between 50-75grams a protein a day to make me feel fool. I do not use the powder with milk, just water. Would this be ok, specially for my work out that include weight lifting and high intense cardio.
I am going to begin my first one, a 15 day this weekend I hope. Other than the weekend plan, the others all have chewing meals included every day. I will do better with strictly juice (and water). Does it matter what knids of juice I use in their place? I’m on no meds, my Dr has said ok and I’m 20 lbs overweight. I just don’t think I can do it if I can eat sometimes and not other times.
Hi nowscasnning, here is more info about how to create your own juice only reboot http://www.jointhereboot.com/want-to-do-a-juice-only-reboot/
Enjoy!
I am going to start juicing” again” I normally put about 1/8-1/4 c chia seed cause I work in a fast moving environment. I need the protein but is that too much or not enough? I do it with every juice except night time.
Hi starpark18 – chia seeds can be a very healthy addition to your juice. Usually the serving size is 3 Tbsp and it’s really a personal preference how much to add – I think 1/8 cup three times a day sounds fine. Enjoy!
order vasodilan
http://www.freedomyou.com/protein__fasting_freedomyou.aspx
Be careful with protein while fasting. I was going to supplement with protein powders until I read about those folks dying from the optifast from excess urea because of the protein. Now those folks were only doing protien and not juice. I’ve done 19 days on juice without protein and I don’t feel weaker or less strong in my workouts. Just a couple times of nausea ending my boxing early.
Hi Stacy,
Thanks for the article. So why don’t I see peanut mentioned in the article? It has protein too. Please let me know. Thanks.
Hi medved, yes legumes, nuts and seeds are excellent for protein – we just don’t officially include them as part of a reboot but many people choose to do a modified reboot and include these gems. A reboot is technically a time for just veggies and fruits but there are so many successful variations we’ve seen that you are welcome to include some if you wish.
Thanks a lot for replay, Stacy.
I want to do the same plan as Joe Cross did, together with my brother. He has exactly the same disease as Joe Cross had. Joe Cross didn’t eat nuts and seeds during his reboot? Could you be so kind please to let me know the list of vegetables and the amount I need to consume in order to have the same plan as Joe Cross had? I can’t find it anywhere. Thank you very much.
Hi medved, my pleasure. Right, Joe did not have nuts and seeds during his reboot but did afterwards. The details of his plan varied depending on his travels across the US and what was available – but overall lots of greens and also a variety of colorful fruits and veggies. Kale was (and still is) a big favorite! Check out the Mean Green juice as a start. Also, Joe is wrapping up a reboot right now and has been posting his juice everyday on his facebook page so I encourage you to check that out too. Best to you both!
Stacy: My husband is considering the Reboot program for weight loss and to normalize blood sugar. He is type 2 diabetic with diet control – averages 130-160 fasting. He also has polycystic kidney disease. His GBR is 36. Would this fast hurt him? Could it help him?
Hi Janie, that’s wonderful your husband is interested in a reboot! Here is info about a reboot and diabetes http://www.jointhereboot.com/sweetness-how-to-manage-your-sugar-intake-and-reboot-with-diabetes-2/
He should check with his doctor about specifics and for clearance but overall, being very well hydrated while on a juice fast will be very important – if done right, under medical supervision, it could be very helpful as there are many nutrients in vegetables and plant foods that can help to keep the kidneys healthy and blood pressure down which can be an issue for some people with PKD.
Wasn’t Joes actual weight loss during the 60 days 82 pounds? and 30% muscle is 32 pounds. That’s quite a bit!!
Hi
I am on day 11 with a weight loss of 20 lbs. I am very happy and feel more alert then ever. My only question is I have been craving chicken / meat like crazy. I am finding myself dreaming about eating food. Is that a sign that my body wants me to eat or just my Subconscious trying to mess up my weight loss plan ?
We are going to try either the 10 day or 15 day reboost soon. Our only concern is my husband is on Warfarin (the blood thinner) for a DVT he has in his leg. He is supposed to avoid those things with Vitamin K, such as dark green veggies, Kale, avocado, etc. Can he still get protein benefits without doing as much of the green juicing? The reason he has to avoid is it can mess up his blood checks, making his blood too thin or not thin enough and meds then need adjusting. We can’t wait to reboot!
Hi Sandra, it’s so important for your husband to take his Vitamin K intake into consideration during his reboot. He may want to add some chia seeds or other protein to his juice as needed to bump this up instead of increasing the green veggies. Being consistent with Vit K intake is most important and keeping his coagulation team in the loop. They can also monitor his labs to see if he needs more protein which not everyone does. Keep us posted!
This is a great article without knowing any of this I just kind of figured it out. I drink a 16 oz glass tea in the morning then one half hour before I either walk or go on a up-hill bike ride I juice 16 of Mean-green juice. After my rides I will go eat two tostadas of fish and then go home and I feel awesome. I just felt that as hard as I walk and ride that my muscles need protein to recover better. I started juicing and either walking or riding bike everyday since July 26, 2012 and I weighed 274.3 pounds and my waist was 51 inches I, Weighed myself today And I am at 264.4 and my waist is 50 and inch in one week I am pumped! THanks for such a great website!
Hi Stacy, my b/f and I started the 10 reboot today. He’s has Hemochromatosis so we’re worried about too much iron (especially with the green veggies). I think the fact that we’re removing all red meat would have a net zero effect, but his iron count is currently high enough to have to have his blood drawn for the next three weeks. Any suggestions or additional information for us?
hi stacy, thanks for all this great answers.. Today was my first day juicing i did 3 total breakfast lunch dinner but by 8pm I fell of the wagon and started eating 6 baby carrots and 1 corn on the cobb (freshly cooked for my daughter) now I feel bump down I FAILED =( I wanna loose weight am 160lbs at 5’4 am 32yrs and have 4 kids goin thru very stressful time right now.. Please advise me what and how can I stay on track.. can i do juice breakfast and dinner and have a salad no dressing but with maybe some fish? Is eating green mango (fresh) alright? hope you can answer my anguish question….thank you
Hi mabellemus, thank you so much for reaching out and I have good news for you – you have NOT fallen off the wagon at all! In fact, many of our programs include foods/eating + juicing. Check out our Plus Dinner program – this may be best for you – drink a juice for breakfast, another for lunch and 1-2 small ones as snacks in between, then a healthy dinner with lots of veggies and even a protein like wild fish. Also, the Quick Start and Express reboots include eating foods like corn or carrots along with juice. It sounds like you need to increase your juice intake if you plan to only juice – we suggest a range of 4-6 per day. Best to you and hang in there — we are all here to support you
Hi Heather, welcome to reboot! I agree with you that if he was a big red meat eater before, eliminating this will help his hemochromatosis and iron levels a lot, even in spite of consuming leafy greens. Also, the iron absorption from plant foods is best when vitamin C rich foods are also present, so you have a few ways to adjust his iron intake and absorption. Iron rich veggies include leeks, spinach, kale, collard/mustard/beet/turnip greens. Perhaps include other greens to balance the amount of these out – so for example in a green juice you could use 1 handful of kale and 1 handful of romaine lettuce to reduce the iron content and also boost greens with zucchini, cucumber, celery. The best way to adjust the ingredients in his reboot is to follow his blood levels – if he drinks a lot of leafy greens and doesn’t eat meat, compare that lab value with his value from eating meat and let’s see. Keep us posted!
Wheatgrass has more protein per ounce than beef. There are skeptics who think Vegetarians are unhealthy because they don’t get protein in their diet. In actuality they may get more protein than the average meat eater. Ya for wheatgrass!
I have hypo thyroidism.. have had it for over 20 years now and take 90 mg of armour a day.. I also have low blood sugar and have fibromyalgia and problems sleeping.. I feel like I need extra protein in my dies Stacy what do you think?. I have not committed to a total juice fast yet as I have already done at 8 day master cleanse this year..
Hi Nancy, here are tips for the reboot and sleep as well as thyroid issues – Claire our Naturopath has written some excellent articles on these topics
and here’s another one on blood sugar
http://www.jointhereboot.com/you-snooze-you-lose-and-why-thats-a-good-thing/

http://www.jointhereboot.com/sweetness-how-to-manage-your-sugar-intake-and-reboot-with-diabetes-2/
I think that including some extra protein like the ones mentioned in this article could be helpful considering your personal details – also drinking juice often throughout the day that is mostly veggies with just a little fruit will help to keep your blood sugar steady and drinking some extra water is another way to promote this. Consider easing into a juice only reboot with a juice + eating plan like our Plus Dinner, Quick Start or Express programs. Wishing you all the best! Let us know how we can help
Stacy, I am having a knee replacement surgery Sept 20th. I know this is the best way to take of some weight. My doctor tells me for every pound I lose, I take 4 pounds off my knee. My doctor wants me to eat fruits, veggies and protein. Do you need extra protein as you get ready for surgery? After the surgery, can I stick with this way of eating. What will be the protein demands for my body to mend and heal. I really don’t want to reintroduce any thing that inflames and I want to continue as a vegan. Thanks for your thoughts and KNOWLEDGE.
Hi Stacy, thanks for all the info, this is great stuff. I’m new to juicing and am going to start my first ever juice only reboot on Friday. My concerns are I want to make sure I’m doing it “right”. I’m so scared I will screw this up somehow and not get the desired results (weight loss, migraines and I have celiac disease). Can you spell it out for me? I’m committing to 10 to 15 days to start for a juice only reboot…so I need to drink between 4 and 6 (16oz) cups of juice a day, right? Can ANY recipe work, or does it have to be the mean green only, etc. Sorry, I’m still a bit confused and want to do this rigtht. Thank you!!
Hi Greenbean- great questions! Yes, you want to drink 4-6 juices at 16-20 oz each plus at least 64 oz of water or more. Drink juice often throughout the day and don’t worry about having too much; listen to your body and drink accordingly. You should strive for at least 2 green juices and the rest a variety of colors using any recipe you wish that you find on this site, other places or create your own, to get the full spectrum of nutrients to support your wellness during this process. Enjoy and let us know if you have any ?s!
Hi Hatheway, that is wonderful you are going to use healthy veggies and juice to promote weight loss to benefit your knees and sounds like your doctor is on board too. I agree you will need extra protein before and after surgery plus extra micronutrients. Consider adding a daily juice to a healthy plant based diet and holding off on a full reboot until after you heal from your sugery. All the best and please keep us posted!
Hi Stacy, I am scheduled to have gastric sleeve surgery on Monday, but having second thoughts. My friend encouraged me to watch the video and I am sold. I am going to cancel my surgery and reboot! I need to lose 70 pounds and want to do the fast for 60 days. I have been on a high protein liquid diet for 10 days, should I gradually move to no protein, or do you think it will matter to start the rebbot right away? Also, I have been worried about hair loss due to lack protein. Should I be concerned about this if I am fasting for 60 days?
10 days. Any supplements you would recommend to help prevent this?
Hi Kimc, what an amazing decision you’ve made for your health by postponing your surgery to see if a veggie based juice plan might help you lose the weight instead. I think you can transition into the reboot and if you feel the need for extra protein beyond the veggies, follow the guide in this post and add some pea protein powder, chia seeds or spirulina or hemp seeds. Regarding hair loss, be sure to drink lots of juice – 4-6 per day and plenty of water to help keep your body including hair healthy. Dark green veggies and omega3 rich ones like mint have lots of nutrients to promote healthy, strong hair. If you have an issue with hair loss a biotin supplement may help. If you are vitamin D deficient or insufficient continue taking that during your reboot and you may also take B12 especailly for an extended juice plan. Be sure to check in with your doc to monitor you during the 60 days. Best to you and let me know if you have any ?s along the way!
What do you think about brown rice based protein powder?
From your article and reader comments I can see that there is a lot of confusion about the role of juicing to “reboot” the system. Essentially the Joe Cross reboot process is a juice fast or juice feast as it’s sometimes called. A treatise on therapeutic fasting is beyond the scope of this particular post however it is important to understand the underlying mechanism of fasting and the role live juice therapy has in the fasting process.
Juice fasting has an alkalizing effect on your body’s Ph balance which in turn assists in neutralizing systemic acidity primarily derived from eating too much heavy animal or even some plant based proteins like grains and legumes. During a prolonged fast the body’s own metatabolic process does the heavy lifting work of ‘cleaning house’ not the live juice in and of itself. Live juice and especially green juices are the solvents, the scrubbers that assist in regulating the cleansing/detox/reboot process.
Raw juices are also replete with biophotons – those light rays of energy plants get from the sun. By bombarding the body with phytochemicals, enzymes and micro-nutrients many of the unpleasant conditions and symptoms experienced during a prolonged therapeutic fast are minimized or eliminated entirely. So you gain the benefits without the pain.
Another aspect of juice fasting that many people don’t take into account is the ‘transition’ phases before and after attempting a prolonged juice fast. A transition diet is a vital component in any therapeutic fasting regime. A good rule of thumb to follow is – if you plan to juice fast for a week, the before and after transition period should be a week as well. Joe’s 5/5/5 plan is a good example.
As for proteins, simply load up on lean mean & clean protein as part of your regular diet and healthy lifestyle after the reboot ~ detox period is over. Hit the gym with renewed vigor and purpose. Your body will fill out with lean muscle quickly enough.
Hi there! I just watched Joe’s movie and it really intrigued me. I have been doing some research since then and while it seems like a challenge, it also seems manageable. I’m worried though because I’m seeing lots of people lose weight in such a short period of time. I’ve always been told that it was unhealthy for a person to lose more than 5 pounds per month. I need to lose 20 to 30 pounds and would love to eat healthier, and I’m seriously interested in giving this a shot. Can you explain to me where the weight loss is coming from and put my worries to rest?
Hi Stacey, another question. I was hoping to get a better idea of the side affects of the Reboot. I eat horribly, lots of soda and junk food. Are withdrawals from caffeine going to be terrible? I’ve been reading about hyper active bowel movements and constipation. Also, will this fast help with my acid reflux? Thank you for your time!
I saw a product in a natural food store that intrigued me. It was a protein powder that was made by grinding fermented, sprouted brown rice. The clerk in the store told me that fermenting and sprouting the brown rice helps it develop into a whole protein. Is this true?
Here’s a reference if you want to hear what the company that produces it is saying.
http://sproutliving.com/blog/organic-whole-grain-brown-rice-protein-powder.html
I LOVE Joe. I LOVE Stacy, and I LOVE Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead. I tell people about it all the time!
Hi Cameron, thanks for the love!!! Yes, sprouted brown rice protein powder is another good choice for a plant based addition. Enjoy!
May seem like a dumb question but do you have to use only green kale or can you use other colors avail at my food market there is a black kale and others will they work like the green kale? Just started juicing and seems to be working great a 3lb a day result but I want to do it right. The reboot only the green monster or do other juices work as well as the green monster.
Great question vinsue! Yes we encourage you to include all the many colors of kale and other veggies available at your local market. The various colors indicate the presence of additional health promoting phytonutrients like anti oxidants. You can include a wide variety of juices as well. Enjoy!
Thanks for the reply Stacy still going down just not as much now loosing 1 to 2 lbs drinking the same juice 3 times a day but hey I will take it. I am going to try mixing some of the other juices in the forum as you mentioned is there anything I should stay away from that may counteract my sucess and cause me to gain weight again? Also some of the veggies are making more of the juice per the reciepe it usually makes 18 to 20 ouces of juice how much should I be drinking at one sitting I am assuming I have to drink what the reciepe says correct?
Hi vinsue, as far as preventing weight gain after your reboot, sticking with juice once or twice a day at first can help and being mindful to eat healthy plant meals often. You are correct that depending on your juicer and actual size of veggies/fruits the yield will vary from recipe to recipe. Generally we suggest drinking 16-20 oz at a time but go with what feels right to you in the moment.
Stacy so far so good keep going down. I was wondering if the reboot will still work in addition to drinking the green monster 3 times a day if I can also say eat some veggies like carrot stix or celery sticks or brocoli for a snack or do I have to stick to juicing only? I was also thinking of eating a few almonds or some kind of nut like 3 or so to take off the edge. What kind of nuts do you recomend or veggies I can eat in addition or should I eat a salad in place of one of the juice.
Hi Vinsue, glad you are doing well so far. Yes eating veggies/fruits is part of many reboots -check out our quick start or plus dinner plans for ideas. If you want to try a modified reboot adding other plant foods like raw unsalted nuts that is also OK and can be helpful for many while still producing excellent health related benefits. All nuts are good for different reasons and contain healthy fats and important vitamins and minerals. Enjoy!
Stacy-
I saw a comment where you offered to make protein intake recommendations for someone if they sent you some stats. Could you do the same for me? I’m a newbie, so this is the only way I know how to contact you.
Thanks!
Tony
Hi Tony, sure! You can email me at stacykennedy@jointhereboot.com or post more info here
If anyone has any questions about how much (or how little) protein one needs to maintain a healthy disease free body, among many other things about that subject, watch the documentary “Forks over Knives” which has so much information I was astounded. I have been health conscious most of my adult life, but cannot believe how much misinformation is put out there for us to believe and accept that has no basis in fact, theory or practice. What is often accepted by the mainstream is often what is put out there by the corporate “biggies” and the only ones who profits from this media blitz of propaganda about these untruths are the corporate thugs who put it out there. We have to take responsibility for our health and well being, and rather than accept this misinformation, we must do the searching for the facts ourselves, and also to teach our children that this is what they must do also. To do otherwise, we will all end up sick, overweight, and with dementia or other disabilities that will make it much harder or impossible to turn back. GMO crops and the corporations that are bringing them to us only care about the well being of their bottom financial line, as well. This is a newer but ex- tremely dangerous road our government, along with it’s corporate backers, are taking us down.
Hi JBR, the amount of protein you need is highly individualized and depends on a number of factors. Meeting with a nutritionist who is well versed in plant based diets could help you construct an eating plan or determine your nutritional needs. It is fantastic that you are looking at the complexity of health and wellness and figuring out how you can make positive change in your life and in your community.
i am really excited to start this juice fast, i dont take any medication and im not overweight, i am actually a bit underweight so is this a good idea for me to try it?
Hi turk, here are guidelines for your reboot to reap the health benefits without losing weight http://www.jointhereboot.com/how-to-reboot-without-losing-weight/ Enjoy!
Once I start the jjuice fastin. How much juice do I drink throughout the day?
Hi Mary, we suggest 4-6 juices per day at 16- 20 oz (480-600mL) each plus lots of water – at least 64 oz/2L
Enjoy!
Hi im having surgery a tummy tuck n my dr said its ok to juice preop but i wanted to up my protein intake what would be the best ??
Hi Kenia – drink juices with lots of dark greens which are higher in protein and also include the broccoli stalk. Feel free to add some healthy protein like chia seeds, pea or hemp protein powder. Best to you!
Hi Stacy I live in Japan and the diversity of vegetables that I can get is much different than in the US, I’m starting my first reboot using Goya ans several other greens but can’t find kale. Do you have any suggestions of things I should add?
Hi Danny, you can use other greens in place of kale – and feel free to utilize the local veggies you have, our plans and recipes are meant as suggestions. Green cabbage, arugula, swiss chard, mustard/collard/dandelion/beet/turnip greens, broccoli are all in the same family as kale (cruciferous) but you could also use spinach or romaine lettuce as alternatives that are also very nutrient dense.
Why is it necessary to juice rather than just eat the entire vegetable or fruit? I feel guilty to waste so much of the vegetable when juicing.
Great question Christie!!! When you juice and remove the insoluble fiber it can help enhance the absorption of many nutrients including enzymes. Don’t waste the pulp! Here are ideas for how you can use it – the broth is a good choice if you are on a juice only reboot.

This was very helpful as I too had the same concern about losing muscle not just fat, especially because the loss of weight is so fast. I was losing an average of a pound a day for the first 8 days so I added flax to increase calories, fat and protein. Nothing worse than losing your muscle by losing weight too fast.
I am so excited, been pricing juicers.I have done nutritive cleanses ,my longest was 5days but was allowed to snack on raw broccoli etc.The fast was based on balanced nutrition.Hard to not chew food so only snacked if times were hard (only allowed snacks which were raw veggies)I am a struggling gastric bypass recipient and loved the feeling of fasting and need the discipline of fasting and self control.I can not wait to get started.
Confused, confused and confused what do you recommend after one week on only juices I gonna do kick boxing do I need an extra protein and what protein, thank you.
Hi clau, let’s clear up the confusion! Here are 2 articles that may help
http://www.jointhereboot.com/fitness-facts-for-your-reboot/
http://www.jointhereboot.com/fruit-and-vegetables-for-improved-exercise-performance/
For proteins, there are many good choices of you want to add something to your juice. I’d suggest – chia seeds or pea protein powder and plan to drink an extra juice, more water and some coconut water for electrolytes.
Let me know if you have any questions
Can I add moringa in my juice?
Hi Saru, yes this sounds like a healthy addition and a great idea
I have been very sick with Urticaria and I am excited to finaly find some answers. I need to know what plan would be best for me in order to eliminate the Urticaria. In the past 6 months while trying to figure out the cause of this rash I have changed my eating and have already lost 55 pounds. I do not want to lose more than 30 more pounds. The only meds I am on is Predisone but it does not seem to be helping the radh in the dose they have me on. Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Deb
Hi Debra, welcome to reboot! There are other community members with Urticaria who can also weigh in and help you. I would suggest following a plan similar to Joe and Phil since they too had this condition. Check out the Classic reboot and include at least 2-3 juices per day that are green, including the Mean Green and Green Lemonade and then make up the rest of your juices – total of 4-6 per day – with other colorful fruits and veggies to get a wide variety of important nutrients. Aim for an 80/20 ratio of veggies/fruits and drink at least 64 oz of water per day. Let me know if you have any questions.
I saw the Video last night and today just made a “mean Green” WOW! pretty good.
I lost most of my weight w/ Atkins but that last 7-10 pounds is a bear. I am hoping that this will get me there and keep me there. Congrats to everyone who is losing the weight. Keep up the great work!
Hello, my husband and I are in the 60 day plan, took 3 days and I feel great but he is concerned that believes that not getting enough protein, I want to know which plants or fruit you should add to your juice to have the necessary protein, and also want to know during the remaining days we always take the same juices or the idea is to be varied, if we like more one juice than another . Thanks
Hi Velopez, welcome to reboot! There are some protein tips here in this article – green veggies are very high and carrots/beets have some protein too. You can add protein like hemp seeds, chia seeds, pea protein powder, etc… if you would like or need to. We do suggest a variety of colorful fruits and veggies over the 60 days to get all the nutrients your body requires. Check out our amazing juice recipes or feel free to mix up your own combinations. Wishing you well!
I’m on day 12 of my 30 day fast and i have noticed that i have lost some pounds . but, i have also noticed that my bloating hasn’t decreased all that much. What is the cause of that and what can i do about it ?
I just read “Hungry for Change” and thouroughly enjoyed it. But in that book it quotes Joe as saying he lost, “close to 80lbs” in sixty days, not 100lbs.
I was given a Jack Lalane juicer a few months ago. I saw the Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead documentary and was inspired. Will the Jack Lalane juicer work for this program?
I wanted to get the most of kale and other leafy greens. Can I blend them and mix with the rest of the juice?
I was so happy to read this information as I was very concerned about protein intake. I do not want to lose any muscle mass during my reboot if that is possible. I feel that muscle in the end will be something that helps to keep pounds off since it burns calories even while we rest. Also, I am hoping to work in the fitness industry soon and I want to look strong and lean.
Stacy, I will begin my first reboot this Saturday. (My new juicer is in the mail) I do have some Chie Seeds. How much do I use at one juicing?
Hi prism, terrific! I would suggest 1 spoon of chia seeds per juice and if you like the texture a lot you can increase to 2 spoons for a larger glass like 20 oz of juice.
While researching online I was very surprised to find that Avacodo has no protein. But you stated above that is does. Can you clarify this issue for me? Thanks
Hi Kathleen, great question! Here is a link to the nutrient analysis in avocado – 1 cup has ~ 3 gm of protein
http://www.calorieking.com/foods/calories-in-fresh-fruits-avocados-average-all-varieties-raw_f-ZmlkPTYzODU0.html
I’ve been drinking a juice of
2 extra large leafs of kale
Giant handful of spinach
1 long celery stalk
1.5 cucumbers
1 green apple
Do I need to switch up juices or am I getting all the proper nutrition from this one? If there are nutrients Im lacking, could you point them out and tell me how I can get them? I want to do this drink for a month. Is that advisable?
Let me clarify on that Kale, when I say 2 extra large leafs, I mean 2 full huge stalks of Kale. I think that would be the equivalent of 5-6 cups maybe 8!
Hi Michael, your green juice is very nutrient rich and an excellent choice but we do suggest getting a variety of colors throughout the day to get the full spectrum of nutrients your body needs. Add in an orange/red juice that includes items like carrots, sweet potato, beet, butternut squash, oranges, melon, etc… Also a blue/purple for potent antioxidants that includes items like purple/black grapes, blueberries, red/purple cabbage. You can add some of these into your green drinks or keep a few drinks green, one orange/red and one blue/purple to get it all. Enjoy!
Woohoo! Thanks Stacy! Thats great advice. I have made a red one that I like, it has:
3 carrots
1 big red apple
1 small beet (or 1/2 large beet)
1 large handful of red cabbage
I like this one better because it is much sweeter, but I had thought to put it to the side and just do green drinks. Thanks for helping me realize I need a wide variety. I’ll look to add a blue/purple drink as well!
Thanks so much Stacy. I am strongly considering this reboot and had an issue with the protein and fiber intakes. Thanks for sharing!
When should reboot friendly additives be added? I’m assuming it should be added to the finished product but just want to make sure.
Hi Danieve, great question! Correct – add in protein powder, chia seeds, etc… after you juice your fruits and veggies – into the finished product. Stir them in and enjoy
Hi Stacy,
I am 48 hypothyroid female, allergic to soy. Over the years diferent doctors hae told me I need a high protein diet. Struggling my whole life with cstant fatigue. The best cure I have found is high protein breakfast, to give me energy, ussually egg whites, greek yogurt, rice protein powder in a smoothie, & or almond butter on Ezekial 49 bread. This is the only concern I have of starting my juicing adventure with my gusband next week. Any thoughts, suggestions, reassurances you might have will be greatly appreciated! My husband and I ae stating to wean ourselves off our beloved caffeine, sugars, etc…
Thanks in advance! ~ Sue
Hi Sue, you could juice and add some smoothies with plant protein to your regimen or add protein powder to a few of your juices each day. You may or may not need it though. You could try with then after 3 days without and see how you feel in terms of energy. Be sure to drink lots of water and also read this great article by Claire http://www.jointhereboot.com/hyperthyroidism-and-goitrogens/
Spot on with this write-up, I absolutely think this
amazing site needs much more attention. I’ll probably be back again to see more, thanks for the advice!
Can you eat nuts and if so which nuts can you eat
Hi Stacy. I don’t know if you remember me but I did a 60 day fast a couple years ago. I just wanted to let you know how much help you were. I also look forward to your knowledge on this new adventure as well. Have a great day!
Hi Stacy. I don’t know if you remember me but I did a 60 day fast a couple years ago. I met you at Joe’s screening in Mass ( https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10150250475845452&set=t.639571453&type=1&theater ) just wanted to let you know how much help you were. I also look forward to your knowledge on this new adventure as well. Have a great day!
Hi Kevin, It’s so great to hear from you!!! Yes, I remember meeting you at the FSAND screening in Northampton – was it already almost 2 years ago?!?! Wow, great photo in FB, thanks.
How are you doing? I would love to hear all about your new adventure. Please keep in touch. stacykennedy@jointhereboot.com
Hi Stacy,
My husband is from Turkey and he has lived here for about five years. About a year ago, he developed GERD and has horrible symptoms that his meds do not always alleviate. I am afraid that his GERD is caused by an American diet. I was wondering if the juice fast has helped others with GERD and if so, if there are any special modifications needed.
Thanks,
Christi
Hi Christi, yes a juice fast/reboot has helped others with GERD. Important considerations are to avoid highly acidic or spicy juices, drink in smaller amounts throughout the day, if having trouble with reflux add some protein (like options listed here) into juice, be well hydrated. Hope this helps and keep us posted. We are rooting for him!
I keep reading different responses to this question — many that say juiced vegetables contain little to no protein compared to when they are consumed whole. Say I juice 3 cups of spinach — will that have all the protein it does when consumed raw/cooked? If not, do you know (approximately) how much protein it still contains? Thanks so much!!!
Hi Kayleigh, the protein amount will be less than eating the whole vegetable but still present in some amount. I would estimate the 3 cups of spinach provides about 1-1.5 grams of protein to your juice.
I read this article to gather info about muscle loss during the reboot, as my Dr. was concerned about a lack of protein. While I found the info very helpful, I still think the 30 lbs of muscle loss that Joe experienced is A LOT! Could he (or we) reduce that amount further by adding more protein? While I’m looking forward to the benefits of weight loss, I do not want to end up yo-yo’ing due to a significant amount of fat-burning muscle.
Hi Angela, I think in addition to adding in protein doing some resistance exercise and walking is important to preserve muscle mass during a reboot or juice fast. Check out our great tips and workouts here

Hi Stacy my dad is juicing what joe did but he seems not to go #2 I gave him a natural lax. Is he missing something in the juicing diet?
Hi Matt, your dad may need to drink more water, walk more often or more juice. He can also try Senna tea like Smooth Move or other brands. Getting a variety of juices, not just green, can help too like those including cabbage and beets.

Protein & The Reboot – Setting The Record Straight http://t.co/dY39mRWymg
Hi. I’m looking for info on the different groups of incomplete proteins, so I know how to properly match up my vegan Ps. I know rice goes with beans, but that’s about it. I only found one chart online and it was small with only a few examples. Thanks.
Hi curlieq42, you don’t actually need to mix and match specifically but rather eat a wide variety of protein rich plants to get all the necessary building blocks.
I am wondering if you would need some healthy fat in the diet? Since fat helps you feel satiated. Also, how much protein is in a glass of juice?
Hi Loretta, yes absolutely healthy fats are important as well. Here’s more on this topic http://www.rebootwithjoe.com/healthy-fats-on-a-reboot/
One glass of green juice can typically offer 5-8 grams of protein although it depends on how much juice you get and starting ingredients.
