June Group Reboot – Day 2: Juicing On The Go

Hi Rebooters!
I’d like to introduce myself and welcome you to our June Group Reboot here at Reboot Your Life. Some of you may already know who I am, I’ve been a part of Team Reboot for the past few years and a big fan of plant-based diets and juicing for most of my life. In addition to my work with Reboot, I am a senior clinical nutritionist at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute/Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston and work in private practice including local health clubs as a nutritionist and personal trainer. I love to experiment with new recipes and make juice for my family to sample.
I’m here to answer any questions that you have about juicing, Rebooting, eating a healthy plant-based diet, weight loss, wellness and nutrition. I am so pleased to be joining you in the June Group Reboot experience.
We’re on day 2 of this amazing Group Reboot and I hope it’s going well so far for each of you. Today, you may be feeling a little sluggish or even have a headache or achy flu-like symptoms. This is a common experience that could related to a number of factors, like abruptly stopping coffee or natural detox processes occurring in the body. Any rapid shift in eating patterns, even a healthy one, can elicit this sort of response initially. But hang in there – this will pass and you’ll most likely start to feel pretty incredible soon. Drink more water and plenty of juice to help support your body and give it what it needs to ease your experience. If you are eating and juicing don’t shy away from snacking on vegetables and fruits between meals.
We all know that when drinking juice, fresh is best. But why exactly? And what if you are a busy person on the go and not able to break out your juicer 4, 5 or even 6 times a day? Don’t fret we’ve got the answers.
WHY FRESH?
Once you’ve experienced fresh juice and realize that it tastes SO much better than your average juice off the grocery store shelf; you’re hooked! Fresh juice also looks amazingly vibrant. The reason why fresh juice looks and tastes so incredible is thanks to the high levels of nutrients. Phytonutrients, vitamins, minerals and enzymes to be more specific. These plant-based gems do everything from support our immune system to promote healthy looking hair and skin. They are so impressive but also fragile.
Some nutrients are susceptible to being degraded or broken down by exposure to heat, light and air (oxygen).
Heat: Reduces many B vitamins, Vitamins C and E
Light: Lowers Vitamin B2 (riboflavin), B1 (thiamin), B6, Folate, Vitamins A and E.
Oxygen: Degrades Vitamins C, A, E, K and many B vitamins
Freezing: Reduces Vitamin C, Potassium, Copper
STORING JUICE
But it’s not all or nothing. While drinking fresh juice is best, storing it for 24-48 hours in the fridge is also a good option and helpful for staying on track. Nutrient levels will gradually decrease from exposure and time but won’t be completely absent from your juice. Drinking juice you made the night before still has tremendous value and can offer health promoting benefits. Plus it’s important to make your Reboot a practical experience in your everyday life; something you can stick with and enjoy for 3, 5, 10, or 15+ days.
Have a dose of fresh juice right when you make it, then store the rest for your meals later that day or the following day. This will help ensure you get the most potent juice possible for at least one serving.
The best ways to store your juice are:
• For 24-48 hours in the fridge (72 hours is maximum time suggested)
• In an airtight container, preferably glass but BPA-free plastic works too
• Seal tightly and fill to the top to prevent oxygen from getting in
• In a dark, cool environment away from heat and light
• Bring a cooler along if you’ll be away from a fridge
• Don’t leave your juice in the car especially on a really hot or really cold day
• Freezing is also an option but less desirable than refrigeration.
• If you do freeze your juice do it immediately after juicing. Thaw in the refrigerator and drink within 7-10 days of freezing.
Check out this video of Joe talking about how long you can store your juice.

I love juicing!!! But I Need recipes I think I’m doing something wrong, either I’m putting more fruit than vegetables or something’s not right!
In my 14 day I was 15 Lbs less but I’m in my 24 day and still the same weight. Please, explain me how to do it, I really need to lose weight. I’m from Mexico and my English is not to good but I understand pretty good! Thanks Stacy!
Hi Jessica, here are some hints http://www.jointhereboot.com/breaking-through-a-weight-loss-plateau/
Let me know if you have any questions!
Hi Stacy,
I’ve just watched the video and think I may want to do this. I looked at the plans but I don’t see a 60 day plan. do you just keep repeating the 3 day plan?
Hi Linda – so glad you are interested in a reboot! Here is more info about how to make your own juice plan http://www.jointhereboot.com/eight-loss-your-reboot/ Let me know if you have any questions.
Hi Jessica, my wife and I are starting to juice tomorrow morning, leaning towards the 3 day plan because of the simplicity, is it ok to repeat the plan over and over for a few weeks?
Hi bigschwag – yes you can repeat the 3 day plan or look to days 6-10 in the Classic plan which is also just juice, for more ideas. Feel free to get creative and use other recipes from this site or your own combos. Aim to drink 4-6 juices per day plus lots of water;at least 64 oz. If you plan to just juice longer then 15 days or if you take medications we suggest you check in with your doctor. Enjoy!
Hi Stacy,
I am going to start a 10 day juice fast. I wanted to find out exactly how many oz I should be consuming a day? I am 5’2 125 lbs. I am hoping it will help handle my autoimmune disorder, vitiligo. Also, what greens would be a really great detox?
Thank you!
Gailene
Hi Gailene, welcome to reboot! We suggest a range of 4-6 juices per day – given your height and weight I would suggest you start with 4, then add a 5th juice if you are feeling hungry, low energy or just want more. Each juice should be 16-20 oz and then drink 64 oz of water a day as well. For greens, they are all amazing but some superstars for liver detox include kale, green cabbage, turnip/beet/collard/mustard greens, swiss chard, arugula, watercress. Also parsley and spinach are excellent choices. Enjoy!
HI Stacy, Is cheese ok? I felt the systems of a headache and being nauseous I just thought I was getting sick. That explains it thank you.
Hi Labarge, glad you are not getting sick and it was more of a detox related issue that has hopefully passed by now
No we do not advise dairy or cheese during your reboot. Try to stick with just plant based foods. Enjoy!
Hello Stacy, I was wondering after reading the reboot phases, I am still trying to figure out which one I should do. My dilemma is I work 12 hours a day 3-4 days a week. I just read how to store your juice and I really would like to just juice only. I was wondering on any other suggestion you may think of. I work 7am to 7pm, so my day starts off at about 4:45 in the morning trying to get started and end at home at about 8pm. I am trying to write down what to juice and when I should be drinking at different times of the day to better assist me to be organized and get my fluids in when needed. Thank you for your time.
Hi Stacy – I’m having a hard time with your comment that frozen juice must be drank within 7-10 days of freezing. Do you have evidence that freezing for longer than this has any detrimental effect on the nutrition of the juice?
I work in the oil field and stay in an RV on location, for 30, 45, 60 days at a time. We’re often a 4 hour round trip from a grocer, and don’t have a potable water supply. Frequent trips to town for fresh produce is not an option when working 12+ hour days, and buying enough drinking water to safely wash produce for juicing would be prohibitive.
I plan to put a small chest freezer in my RV, and spend a few days manufacturing a variety of juices for immediate freezing so that I can do a 60 day reboot. This is the ONLY alternative for me outside of taking a leave of absence from my job.
Do you seriously think this is not an option for me? I look forward to your response.
Hi Lyndon, the 7-10 day suggestion is not a hard and fast rule. I think that in your situation freezing the juice for longer and doing that immediately makes a lot of sense and you will still have a nutritious drink by freezing right away and being certain no air gets in the container – use glass instead of plastic. Your reboot sounds very exciting and amazing that you are making this committment. Let me know if you have any questions along the way and keep us posted on how you’re doing.
I work 12 hour shifts, I make my juice in the morning before work, I drink one glass before I leave for work . I store my juice for the day in mason jars and take in a cooler and store it in the refrigerator. It taste just as good by the the of the day.
what is the nutrional value of the mean green juice?
Hi Felice – it’s about 180 calories and 4-5 grams of protein depending on your yield.
What about juicing refrigerated vegetables in the morning and storing it in a stainless steel vacuum insulated bottle while at work? I haven’t seen anything on weather stainless steel is okay or not.
