Fruits & Veggies: Frozen vs. Fresh

Which is better, fresh or frozen fruits and veggies?  At first it’s easy to see why fresh food makes the most sense but what if you want a specific ingredient that’s out of season or hard to find where you live?  While eating locally and in season is ideal from a nutritional and cost standpoint, there are times where you simply want something that’s out of season, like berries in your morning smoothie. When produce is out of season, choosing frozen can mean getting more nutrients from your fruits compared to fresh.  The elements that can reduce nutrient levels in produce include: – Time since harvest – Exposure to heat, light or oxygen Since frozen fruits and veggies are frozen ... Whole Foods For A Wholesome Life

Do you know the difference between a WHOLE food and a processed food? Don’t feel badly if you don’t. Most people are baffled by this concept. In fact, many folks I encounter believe they’re eating a diet mainly comprised of whole foods, when the majority of their food intake is indeed processed. For instance, did you know that bread is a processed food? Yes, the highly touted “staple” food group is processed due to it’s ingredients such as flour, salt and enriched nutrients. In fact, bread’s known to be one of the highest sources of sodium consumed in the American diet. Take a look at this processed vegan meal (A) compared to it’s essentially non-processed alternative (B): A. Frozen Boca ... Continue

A Glowing Study. Fruit and Vegetables Can Make Us More Attractive!

We have all heard the expression, you are what you eat and now we know; we also look like what we eat! A small study from the University of St Andrews in Scotland showed the groups that consumed just 3 extra serves of carotenoid containing fruits and vegetables showed a small change in their skin tones and colouration in just 6 weeks. The small change was enough to be perceived as more attractive to others. The group that ate more processed junk food became less attractive and paler in the study period. What they discovered was eating fruits and vegetables with carotenoids will increase the yellow and red tones in the skin giving us a more attractive glow. The ... Continue

Fruit and Vegetables May Help Fight Depression

Clinical depression is a mental health condition that affects moods, thoughts and behaviour. Common symptoms include elongated bouts of sadness or lack of purpose, lack of motivation to do things you normally like to do, moodiness, irritability, frustration, spending less time with friends and family, sleep disturbances, fatigue, aches and pains, slowing down of thoughts and actions and uncontrollable crying. Depression is one of the most common mental health illnesses. In Australia on average, one in six people will experience depression in their lifetime. When you’re struggling with depressive symptoms, maintaining good eating habits can be difficult; this is the time when many people will reach for the comfort foods that are high in refined, processed sugar, refined carbohydrates and ... Champion Your Challenge

Deciding to do a Reboot is like taking on a delicious challenge. And like any good challenge, sticking with the goal is rarely easy and (gulp) not even always “fun.” But from the moment we take our first steps to the moment we cross the finish line we know we are doing our body, mind, and (dare I say it?) soul a monumental service.   The most difficult step is almost always the first one we make. So what’s the best way to set ourselves up for Reboot success?   Have a Measurable Goal. This could be a number of days, target weight, quantity of juices, etc. The key ingredient for success is that the goal can be quantified. ... Continue

Antioxidants To The Rescue

It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s…. antioxidants to the rescue!!   By now most of us have heard about antioxidants. But do we really understand what they actually do?   Think of it this way: Free radicals are the bullies in the playground that like to steal other kids lunch money. To make matters worse, in the world of free radicals, if a child’s lunch money gets stolen, they instantaneously turn into bullies themselves!   Now for the good news… Antioxidants are like superheroes that can intervene and replace the lunch money that the evil free radical stole!   Our bodies were designed to handle free radicals on our own. But if our superhero antioxidants fall asleep on ... Continue
