Superfoods to Boost Your Juice

There’s a reason juice is the main focus of a Reboot — it has endless health benefits. But guess what? There are superfoods out there that can boost the nutrients in your juice even more. So why not pump these already healthy drinks with some more healthy greatness?!

Here are 10 unique additions you can add to your juice for more nutrients, antioxidants, phyto-nutritive compounds, fats, protein and/or fiber.

Spirulina

I love spirulina! It is high in protein at 3-9g of protein per 5-15g serving. It is also high in iron with 2 teaspoons offering 3mg of iron which is 22% of your daily requirements. Spirulina is also high in B vitamins, antioxidants such as beta-carotene, zeaxanthin, lutein and xanthophylls, chlorophyll, and is alkalising and contains GLA, a type of beneficial fatty acid. Spirulina also offers benefits for allergies, immunity, improved gut flora, cholesterol, energy and helps to protect the liver from damage. Here’s more on the benefits of spirulina!

Chlorella

Is a powerfully nutrient-rich powder that offers a range of health benefits. One of the most well-known benefits of chlorella is its ability to possibly support the detoxification of heavy metals and cadmium. Chlorella also helps to support immune health by helping the natural killer cell activity, it also may support weight loss and may help to fight cancer.

Wheat Grass

Wheat grass can be juiced and added into any juice to increase the chlorophyll, nutrients, antioxidants and minerals. It can also be taken as a small shot prior to consuming your juice or as a powder in a juice. This is helpful for nutrient content and may help to support energy levels, and it is said to support blood health, tissue healing and immune health.

Chia Seeds

Chia seeds are a great addition for their plant-based omega 3 fatty acid and fibre content. 1 Tb of chia seeds contains 5g of fibre and 2.5g of ALA (alpha-linolenic acid) which then will be converted into Omega 3 fatty acids in the body. They are also helpful for weight loss as they support satiety and appetite control. For more on why you should include these super seeds.

Hemp Seeds

Mixing in hemp seeds in with your juice or smoothie is easy. You can simply stir with a spoon and chew on the seeds or blend the seeds into a powder and mix them into your juice or smoothie. Hemp seeds add in healthy fat, protein (25%), fiber (35%) and contain vitamins and minerals. Hemp seeds are naturally high levels in branched-chain amino acids which supports the growth and repair of muscle making it a good post-workout addition, for each 1oz (28g) serve they are providing 8g of protein.

Turmeric

Turmeric can be added into a juice fresh just like ginger through the juicer, sprinkled in dried, or consumed as a paste for optimum benefits. Turmeric is beneficial for reducing inflammation in the body which in turn supports good health and reduces the incidence of chronic disease, it supports and protects the liver, has anti-cancer benefits, helps to reduce the incidence of Alzheimer’s, fights infections, reduces arthritis and other inflammatory diseases, helps to lower cholesterol and helps to reduce depression.

Ginger

Ginger is a common helpful addition to any juice, it can be added in fresh through the juicer or sprinkled as a powder. Ginger has a range of health benefits and uses. It supports digestion and reduces bloating, flatulence, nausea and supports blood circulation, reduces arthritis pain and inflammation, reduces painful periods, it also offers immune support particularly against upper respiratory infections, and can be helpful in irregular blood sugar control and it also adds a great flavor.

Apple Cider Vinegar

This can be easily added to a juice if you don’t mind the slight sourness that it brings. You can also enjoy it in water with lemon. ACV helps to reduce the appetite, aids weight loss, improves digestion, promotes a healthy gut, improves cardiovascular health, and reduces inflammation and allergies and has a long list of health benefits that is truly amazing as I have just finished writing a book on the benefits of ACV.

Maca

Maca is a great easy addition to any juice or smoothie. This powder is derived from the root of the Lepidium meyenii plant. This is a cruciferous plant and contains the very same nutrients that are beneficial and protective against prostate, breast, colon and lung cancers. This root is possibly helpful in sperm health in men, improves sexual desire, supports energy production and improves mood.

Protein

Adding in protein to your juice can be helpful while completing a juice cleanse beyond 15 days, when committing to a regular exercise schedule to support muscle health and maintenance and an easy way to add a plant-based protein powder into your day. Joe Cross has a specially formulated vegan protein powder that mixes in with your juices easily and contains some additional vitamins and minerals specific to a Reboot plan or for everyday use.
