Reboot: 60 days plus continued juicing
So here I was, sitting on the lounge with my wife watching television and enjoying some potato chips, when I came across Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead.
At the end of watching this insane man go across America without eating and only juicing, I thought wow, that’s it, that’s what I am going to do (except going across America). My wife and I decided there and then that we would start juicing asap. That was June 2013.
We already had a Breville juicer that sat in the cupboard and never got used, so we only had to go and get the fruit and veg. We bought boxes and boxes of the stuff from Sydney Fruit and Veg Markets and we started our 60 days.
When I started juicing I was around 128 kg/282 lbs.
I had put on a lot of weight since I had my back broken in an assault. At 28 years of age, my back was broken at L2/L3, L4/L5, L5, S1 and I had a spinal fusion at L5/S1. Following 11 spinal surgeries, and taking handfuls of pain medications, steroids for inflammation and anti-epileptic drugs, I had just piled on the weight.
As a person with a broken back, exercise just wasn’t possible. I also suffered from Gilberts Syndrome, a liver disorder which increases Bilirubin in the blood stream, that I had had from childhood that would make me turn yellow, always tired and itchy without a rash.
After 60 days juicing, I had lost over 25 kg/55 lbs which was amazing. More importantly, my blood tests showed the lowest levels of Bilirubin I had ever recorded in my life. My skin was the right colour and glowing, I had more energy and the itch had stopped.
During the first 60 days, we broke our first Breville juicer with all the juicing we were doing, and upgraded it to a new one with a big opening to take whole fruits.
Since the initial 60 days of juicing, we have Rebooted several times, to keep a healthy weight while eating other foods. We maintain a regular programme of drinking fresh juice regardless of whether we are Rebooting or not, and now eat more healthy than when we started to juice.
I have now reached 98 kg/218 lbs, 30 kg/66 lbs less than I was 11 months ago. I have lost over 11 inches on my waist, my health is fantastic, and both my wife and I are very grateful we watched Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead. I have thanked Joe several times, and every time I meet people I tell them my story and Joe’s. I try to spread the word as much as possible, because if a fat sick and nearly dead guy with a broken back can loose weight and get healthy, what’s your excuse?
