June Group Reboot – Day 5; Reflections

Congratulations June Rebooters – today is day 5! Great job to everyone and I sincerely hope you are feeling a sense of accomplishment, pride and experiencing fantastic physical and mental health.
Each time I Reboot I learn something new about my relationship with food and who I am as an eater. Being a nutritionist, I think, talk and write about food all the time. And still, I am always surprised at what I discover while on a Reboot. Reflecting on the Reboot experience is helpful to uncover lessons learned and consider how to apply this personal discovery to everyday life.
The Reboot is a time where we put ourselves into a more mindful eating space. Mindfulness is emerging as an important tool for stress reduction, immune support, healthy eating habits and a relationship with food as well as health and wellness promotion. Mindfulness can be defined as paying attention, noticing or being purposefully aware of what is going on without making judgment. This is not an easy feat in our modern culture, but with practice it can become the missing link between wanting to and being able to do healthy behaviors.
One thing I noticed while on this Reboot is how much I eat while cooking. I was surprised. Since I was the only one in my household Rebooting, it was a conscious process not to nibble on the food I was preparing for my family. It wasn’t that this was difficult or that it bothered me not to eat it, but it was interesting to notice that I had to intentionally not do it. It is important to consider “under the radar” eating habits because for example, extra eating while cooking can lead to unwanted weight gain. And eating while multi-tasking can reduce nutrient absorption by as much as 30-40%! Plus, I’m not exactly setting the best example for my kids if I’m chowing down while standing up and walking around the kitchen. Tasting what you are preparing is helpful in cooking (although as I learned during my Reboot not always necessary) but a small taste is different from a continuous stream of nibbles!
We’d love to hear what you learned about yourself while on this Reboot. Even if you plan to continue on past 5 days please share your personal discoveries so far!
Juice on!
Stacy

It is great to hear more of your insight, I enjoyed the movie very much. You have a great way of explaining the process without overwhelming the issue. Thanks.
I have to be honest, I started the 15 day plan 2 days ago and I honestly don’t know I I have the strength to do it. All I see around me is food….even the tablecloth seems edible
Hang in there tjsss1! We are all here to support you which is key and check out our amazing community on the Fat Sick and Nearly Dead facebook page too. This post may be helpful http://www.jointhereboot.com/practice-makes-it-possible/ Best to you and keep us posted!
Hi, thanks for all the suggestions. I’m on day 5 of the 15 day plan and am feeling great. Tomorrow I start the juice only part. I hope I can do it……keping my fingers crossed!
I am amazed at how the subject of food permeates my entire life. You crave it, shop for it, prepare it, store it, and eat it. So many ads on television and in magazine ads on fad diets, pills, and warnings on what to eat/what not to eat. No carb, no protein, no fat. No dairy. It all drives me crazy! Luckily, I am on Day 5 of my juice fast, and my world is suddenly calm and peaceful.
Stacy, I am juicing and want to know if using a blender is okay. I have a juicer now but it takes much more fruits and vegetables using the juicer. I want to do this right. Also is sugar free almond milk ok and is Raw Stevia ok?
Hi Deborah, yes a blender and juicer can both be healthy for your reboot. Here is more! http://www.jointhereboot.com/the-great-debate-juicing-vs-smoothies/
Yes sugar free almond milk and a bit of raw stevia is OK – here’s an almond milk recipe http://www.jointhereboot.com/cinnamon-vanilla-almond-milk-recipe-of-the-week/ Enjoy!
It is amazing to see how much I eat while I cook. Plus you are so right about the example for our children.
I’m at the end of Day 1 and I actually liked the recipes but could not consume more than Breakfast, Mean Green and Gazpacho. Is that okay?
Hi greenmehome – Welcome to your reboot and thrilled you like the recipes!
We suggest drinking 4-6 juices a day at 16-20 oz/500-600mL each with at least 64 oz of water. For one day to drink less isn’t an issue but going forward see if you could squeeze in another juice, even if it’s a bit smaller in size or 2 small juices as “snacks” between the 3 meals to help meet your nutrition needs. Following your hunger and fullness is important and there is great flexibility with the reboot so listen to your body first and foremost.
Isn’t the water intake geared toward how much you weigh and would it be possible to post a formula for figuring it out?
I found one online that has you list your weight and for those who use kilo’s instead of pounds it has both.
Day 2 feel horrible, headache, upset stomach and weak.
Hi Rebecca, hang in there! Try drinking more juice but in smaller quantities more often and also plenty of water. Stick with simple juices like apple carrot ginger, summer green juices and sip on some lemon and fresh ginger in hot water to settle your stomach. These side effects are common the first few days and generally pass around day 3-5. Try to get some extra rest too. Keep us posted and if you are not feeling better we can work together!
I’m on day two of my reboot. My family has told me that I should have started the reboot after the holiday BBQ’s. But my answer is, if not now, then when? Putting it off is not the way to go for me…because then I would never do it. Loved the movie! I am doing fine, a slight headache in the AM of Day 2, but disappeared within the hour. I feel more active, more energy to do things. I do get cravings, but I was so proud of myself for not giving in to the BBQ temptations… For example, I prepared dinner/bbq for the family, but even though I was preparing and exposed with the usual BBQ foods, I kept consistent and didn’t give into temptation. I kept drinking my green juice. I’m looking forward to a healthier life style…
Way to go Patty!!! What an inspiration – thanks for sharing with us and please keep us posted.
Good for you Patty. Just wait until they see the new you. I felt the same way after watching. It seems there is never a good time to do anything like this. Something always comes up. Now is good.
Thank you Stacey and LaurieO for your wonderful comments. I previously posted as Patty, but I just registered…so I have a new username. Besides that…Day 3: Good Morning! Tough…all I can say tough morning…I don’t want to sugar coat it… But, the good news is that its not impossible. If I can do this juicing, believe me, so can you. My daughter keeps telling me my face looks a little different, healthier. I’m starting to wonder if in the past, I was starving my body of proper nutrients and oxygen…oops! I’m about to start my day with my green juice which I do like. I hope you guys don’t mind me sharing my experiences with juicing, it helps me keep accountable and also I love to share the good and the bad…in the end its all an experience towards a healthier lifestyle. Wish me luck, and I hear this is supposed to be one of the toughest days when juicing, day 3. But I’m ready!
Wishing you success in your juicing, let’s do this!!! Have a great day!
Thanks for sharing with us Patty! So thrilled you are getting into juicing and finding ways to enjoy it but figuring out what you like and don’t like without deceiving yourself. There is a vast opportunity for wellness with juice and plant based foods and over time you will be able to discover what makes you feel good and laugh about all the trial and error that comes with the process. Wishing you lots of luck and sending support. Keep us posted!
Day 5: Feeling good and enjoying the green juice. I weighed myself today, I’ve lost 6 pounds. I’m very happy and it just motivated me to continue this endeavor. For years I have tried diet pills, fad diets, and many other suggestions…until now, I had never felt this good about what I’m doing for my health. I’ve also noticed that my digestive system has improved tremendously. For example, before the juicing, I had three weeks going on digestive problems, but I was eating out daily and eating anything from your Big Macs to Steaks…therefore, I pretty sure this had something to do with it… Well, wishing all of you on the juicing journey…success!!!
I am on day 6 and still not feeling good, could it be my age? I am 64
Hi iglass4 – perhaps… be sure you are drinking enough water and juice – at least 64 oz a day for water and at least 4-6 juices 16-20 oz/500-600mL each. Keep us posted!
Thanks Stacy, I followed your recommendation and made sure I was driking enough water and juice.
Now I have another question for you, can I make the juice for the day at one time? It is such a hassle cleaning the juicer 4 times a day.
I did finish my 10 day juicing…lost 10 pounds total. I will plan in incorporating a healthy eating lifestyle as a long term goal. The juicing does work, I highly recommend it.
I started my juice cleanse today 7/28..I was wondering if I still need to take my vitamin supplements
