Juicing and Digestive Upsets

Sometimes when people start juicing in addition to their normal diet or on a Reboot, they can experience many different digestive upsets or changes. This comes from making any type of dietary change such as including more fruits and vegetables in the diet, different fiber content, foods that may be stimulating the liver and gallbladder, new foods that may irritate an already irritated stomach or intestinal lining, new flavors and textures and detoxification symptoms.
These changes or upsets are almost always temporary. As your body adjusts to any type of new plan or dietary change the irritation or symptoms will stop. Symptoms can include nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, bloating, flatulence, reflux, bad breath, increased odor to bowel motions and urine, mucus in the stool, constipation, diarrhea and worsening IBS symptoms. All these symptoms will depend and vary person to person. Often a person’s weak point will be aggravated during a Reboot and in many cases it can be the digestive system.
Here is a list of suggestions to help with any upsets that may be occurring:
1.) It is very important for any symptoms experienced to make sure you are including plenty of additional water as well as your juices. This can lessen the detoxification symptoms experienced.
2.) If any juices are too strong and potent and you feel are upsetting you then I would suggest trying them diluted as you get use to them. Such as a 50% dilution with water then slowly increase the amount of juice consumed with less water.
3.) Including warm/hot water with fresh lemon and freshly grated ginger can reduce nausea and vomiting. Ginger is also considered a herbal carminative which means that it will reduce irritation to the gastro-intestinal lining and it will reduce nausea.
4.) Removing or reducing the gas causing vegetables such as cabbage, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, broccoli, onions and garlic. This is due to the high sulphur content although cabbage traditionally has been shown to reduce ulcers (very old studies) and irritation as it contains high amounts of glutamine so in some cases cabbage juice may help rather than aggravate but this can vary person to person.
5.) Drinking smaller quantities more frequently can help symptoms experienced such as 10oz (300mls) 6-12 times daily.
6.) Chamomile, Peppermint, Licorice, Spearmint, Aniseed and Fennel tea – these carminative herbal teas can reduce reflux, abdominal cramps, flatulence, bloating and IBS.
7.) Marshmallow root tea is an excellent soothing agent although this needs to be simmered on the stove top for 15 mintues rather than steeped.
8.) Fruits and Vegetables to reduce irritation – fennel, apple due to its pectin content, celery, pear and cabbage.
9.) Including herbs & spices in your juice – such as ginger, turmeric, parsley and mint (not all in one juice) these are particularly beneficial for any digestive upsets.
10.) Vegetable Broth & Thai Infused Vegetable broth – also adding some extra freshly grated ginger as you simmer the vegetable pulp may help any upsets. Warming foods can reduce upsets.
11.) L-Glutamine can be useful to reduce irritation to the stomach and intestines. L-Glutamine is food for the intestinal villi and can help improve the integrity of the mucus membranes of the digestive tract.
12.) Slippery Elm – is an excellent demulcent fiber that will reduce inflammation in the throat, stomach, intestines and large bowel. As this fiber passes through the digestive tract due to the polysaccharide content it reduces irritation on contact.
13.) Aloe Vera – This is also very healing to the mucus membranes of the digestive tract. Aloe Vera also contains polysaccharides that have been shown to improve the integrity of the digestive lining and reduce inflammation and improve nutrient absorption.
14.) Probiotics – these very specialised bacterium will help reduce inflammation, stool formation and will enhance gastric mucosal function.
15.) Gentle exercise such as walking, yoga and stretching has been shown to reduce stomach and digestive upsets.
16.) Unfortunately, stress can have a significant negative effect on the digestive system so any type of healthy activity to reduce stress is always an excellent idea such as mediating, reading, gardening, taking a bath containing Epsom salts, having a foot massage etc…whatever activity that helps you to switch for mind off.
Note: Any suggestions can have the opposite effect in some small groups of people. If this occurs, stop immediately.

Very good post…I really enjoyed reading this and learning about it. I had no idea so many different things helped so much and I look forward to using more of them. Thank you Claire
Just juiced 64 oz of 3 different types of fresh juice last nigh at midnight. I left all 3 jars on the kitchen countertop. It is almost 24 hours later. Should I have put those jars of juice in the fridge? Two juices are in 64oz, glass, air tight mason (canning) jars. The other juice is in a glass bottle with a plastic lid and it is pure apple juice. All 3 seem to be developing a lot of pulp which I did not notice immediately after I made the juice last night. Can these jars develop bacteria from sitting at room temp for 24 to 48 hours? I am concerned and don’t want to make my family sick. Please advise.
I have had problems with IBS and erosive gastroenteritis for many years. Thank you for sharing these tips.

Excellent post!!!
Hi, i’m on day 8 of what i hope to be a 60 day juice only reboot. My plan is to go 15 days, if i’m feeling ok push on for 30 days. If at day 30, i feel like i can go on, then press on for the full 60 days.
A couple of things that are concerning me are:
1) My bowel movements are small and not regular like they used to be. I’d read stories from others of how juicing made them go 2 – 3 times a day and “really cleaned them out” (sorry). I’ve not experienced this and in fact feel a little constipated, although i am having a movement pretty much every day. All be it small (again, sorry).
2) One the flip side, i seem to be urinating every half hour. Seems the fluids go in and come straight back out. I’m juicing 4 – 5 times a day and getting 600 – 800ml each time. On top of that, i’d easily be drinking 2ltr’s of water each day.
I’m exercising daily (min 5 often 10k walk) and am also cycling on occoasions and doing light/hi rep weights to try and counter any muscle loss.
In the 7 full days since i started n juice only, i’ve lost 7kg’s. I began preparing for the detox by cutting out foods (inc coffee, tea, alcohol etc) progressively over a 11 day period. Over the full 18 day period of conscious healthiness, i’ve lost 10kg’s.
So, just wondering if the toiletry issues above are anything i should be worrying about or are they perfectly normal?
Sorry for the long post, just thought the background info would be helpful.
I appreciate any advice you’re able to offer.
Cheers
Keep up the good work!!! Last year I fasted last year for 25 days. The more people told me that I couldn’t do it & that I was crazy the more it made me want to do it. I’m in for the long haul this time, 60 days. Last year I didn’t have those bathroom issues, I just didn’t have to go. This time round I’m feeling like I’m going a lot more. This finally stopped. Your body is just trying to get used to the reeboot. I’m 9 days into it. Keep strong, stay focused, you can do it
Only on day two of juicing reboot. Is it normal after drinking v28 or other juicing that has beets for your bowel movement to look redish or like blood.
I am on day 2 of a 5 day fast and I have noticed I am not having any bowel movements and very little gas. I am 5 years post op gastric bypass patient so I am not sure if it’s impending or what but I have noticed today especially this afternoon the more I move around doing simple things like walking normally ( ie; grocery shopping, picking up my kid from school..) that I am getting weird small sharp pains sporadically through my stomach anywhere from my ribs down to my pelvic area….is this normal? Am I constipated? I wouldn’t really know because I am hardly ever constipated in fact I don’t remember the last time I was constipated. I have always been regular ( after coffee in the mornings..but I cut out coffee and all caffeine since starting the reboot). I have increased my water intake and I drink at least 20oz of water after each drink. I have alot of water veggies and fruits in my drinks so I don’t think I need to add extra water afterwards. Is there any simple juice recipes on here that cater to such aliments that could help things more naturally? How long should I wait before seeking medical help ( ie; taking otc meds or getting an enema done)..how many days? I haven’t gained any weight since starting in fact I have lost 3 pounds so far and I feel fine overall. I have been urinating more often so i am guessing that 3 pounds was just water weight. Anyone else had similar issues? Thanks alot in advance!
