Joe’s Journal: Getting Ready Mistakes

We’re kicking off the celebration of Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead’s 2nd Anniversary today!

Now, when I started out filming my personal journey, I had no idea my story would be seen by almost five million people — and counting. Or that it would inspire so many others to start drinking fresh juice, lose weight and get off their medication. Or that two years after its release we’d have such an amazing community of Rebooters.

The anniversary has me thinking about my 60 Day Reboot that lead me not just on a personal journey to health but transformed me into a passionate believer in the power of a plant-based diet. I thought it might be inspiring to relive those 60 days with you. So, every day for the next 60 days, I’ll be sharing details from my Reboot – including where I would have quit the whole thing if I hadn’t hired a film crew to follow me around! I’ll also share tips and answer some frequently asked questions about Rebooting.

Today I’m starting with leading up to my Reboot. If you’re considering starting a Reboot, I suggest you don’t do what I did. Learn from my mistakes, get prepared and TRANSITION IN to your Reboot.

Journal Entry – Pre-Reboot: October 11, 2007
The weeks before I left Sydney that led up to my Reboot were not my finest. Instead of properly preparing for a full two months of consuming only juice by gradually moderating my diet, I had been binging like there was no tomorrow. I don’t know whether this was me wanting to cling to old habits, having a last hurrah with my old vices or just me doing this the way I’d always done them. At that point, my urticaria was at its most severe. I knew this would make getting things back under control even more difficult.

The night before the Reboot started, the clock was ticking away and it was close to midnight. I was both excited and nervous but I trusted the one part of myself I knew I could always count on…my gut. So what did I do? I went out and ordered a cheeseburger and a chocolate milkshake from an old-fashioned American diner. I felt guilty but it was delicious.

I went to bed that night with a stomach full of junk. This was not going to be easy.

If you’re looking to embark on a Reboot, don’t do what I did in the days leading up. What’s my biggest tip? Watch me share it in the video FAQs.

Here are a few more of my tips:
1.) Start adding more fruits and veggies to your daily food intake. We have hundreds of healthy recipes on our site that will help inspire you in the kitchen. Even if you’re still eating the burger, have it with a side of steamed broccoli instead of french fries.

2.) Cut out junk foods and start eating less processed foods.

3.) Reduce the amount of meat you consume so that that  a few days prior to your Reboot you are no longer eating meat.

4.)  Reduce the amount of dairy you consume so that that  a few days prior to your Reboot you are no longer having dairy.

5.) Try to reduce caffeine. I know it can be difficult to give up the morning coffee, but the less caffeine you have prior to your Reboot, the better you’ll feel the first few days.

6.) Drink more water – try for at least 64 oz. of water per day.

7.) Get sleep! The first few days of your Reboot will wipe you out so be sure to load up on extra hours of sleep to help you prepare.

8.) Review our Get Started Plan to make sure you are full prepared to get started.

Do you have a biggest Reboot mistake? Share it in the comments. And tune back in tomorrow to see how my first day went. I’ll give you a hint…it wasn’t pretty!
