Joe’s Journal: Day 47 – A Friend in Colorado

Soon, we were passing though Boulder, Colorado, a beautiful town with a progressive, health-conscious population and a lot of choices in terms of organic produce and other good foods. There, I met a kale farmer and toured his farm. As I’ve previously mentioned, kale is high in calcium, iron, fiber, potassium, and Vitamins A, K, B6, and C, as well as being high in antioxidants. It is a true wonder food. On Dr. Fuhrman’s nutrient-density chart, kale is the permanent tournament leader. For the most powerful vegetable on the planet, the process of growing kale is comparatively low-key; it just needs some dirt and a bit of protection from frost. I took a few bunches with me for the road, knowing they just might be the ones that delivered the killer blow to my Prednisone dependency.

The most memorable and moving experience in Boulder by far was meeting Dominic Lanza, a man very much down on his luck. We sat together on a bench and exchanged stories about where we were in our respective lives. He was extremely overweight – about 380 pounds, he told me – and pretty much destitute. He confided that his primary diet consisted of pies, cakes, and hamburgers. He considered his situation to be hopeless. As I listened to Dominic’s story, I realized how lucky I was to be supported by family, friends, and film crew, and I wondered how I could try and help Dominic, at least in a modest way. I think we established a bond that day and I continue to be in touch with him. I’m still hoping that one of these days something will click inside of him and he’ll want to join me in a Reboot to try and get back on track.
