Joe’s Journal: Day 1 – October 12, 2007

By: Joe Cross

Today is the first day of my 60 day juice fast and the first time I’ll meet with Dr. Fuhrman to assess my current weight and health:
Weight: 309 lbs
Medicine: 15 mg
TC: 8:40

At 6am the film crew picked me up to start filming and head to our first appointment with Dr, Fuhrman. I was not off to a great start…I had forgotten my juice for the day and was surrounded by a van full of people eating bagels and drinking coffee! When I got to his office, he weighed me in at 309 pounds, took my blood pressure and measured my body fat as well as my electrolytes. He would keep an eye on all of this throughout the Reboot process.

At the end of the day I was cranky and exhausted. I went the entire time without any juice. I was starving and low on energy. From there we headed to the beach so I could get my sea legs during the first days of the juice Reboot. I planned to just hunker down and let the cleansing do its work.

That night I finally got my juice and settled into the house in the Hamptons. I was alone and I had a whopping headache, terrible stomach cramps, and overall felt shot to pieces.

I was about as irritable as it gets. This is normal. When the body is working hard to detoxify, deal with not having caffeine if that’s what you’re used to, begin to break certain habits, and so on.

I did what any grown man would do. I called my Mom. Then I went to bed pulled the covers over my head and went to sleep.

Watch this video of me giving you a few pointers to start a Reboot.

A few tips and tricks to help you on your first day:
– You’re going to have a headache, you’re going to be tired, and you’re going to question why your putting yourself through this. Keep reminding yourself that it’s worth it and this tough part will subside.

– And don’t forget to drink your juice like I did! Be prepared the day before so you can begin your Reboot with ease.

– You may not love the taste of green juice right away but your palate will likely start to adjust after the first few days. My go-to was my Mean Green but there are plenty of delicious juice recipes you can choose from on our site. A few good ones to ease you into juicing:
Morning Green Glory Juice
Joe’s Mean Green Juice
Sun Kissed Juice
Peach Pie Juice

More than 20 million people around the world watched Joe Cross juice his way across America, losing 100 pounds and getting off medication in Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead. The film ignited a juicing movement. Viewers around the world have been inspired to start juicing, lose weight and get healthy - and as a result of the film over 370 million glasses of fresh juice have been consumed, 370,000 tons of fruit and vegetables consumed, more than 24.8 million pounds of weight lost, and over 220,000 people are now medication free. Joe's second film, Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead 2 was released in November 2014. Through his journey and the lives of the people he meets throughout the film Joe shares all that he's learned about how to stay healthy in an unhealthy world, revealing that most of us really do have more control over of our health than we think - and that none of us are perfect, especially Joe himself! His book, The Reboot with Joe Juice Diet, hit the New York Times' best seller list in March 2014, and the companion guide The Reboot with Joe Juice Diet Cookbook launched that summer.
