Cheap (But Delicious) Homemade Apple Sauce

I had a heap of organic apples that weren’t looking too hot, so I decided to make a heap of homemade apple sauce. This is great to do when they are on special for a bargain price and in season and it can be easily frozen for later use. Apple sauce is very versatile and can be used in many recipes and can be used to replace ingredients such as oil and eggs and it gives the food a lovely flavor. It can be used in homemade muffins, cakes, cookies, smoothies, loaves, fritters and pies. You’ll also love our raw blueberry applesauce!

Ingredients

  • 8 red apples
  • 1 lemon, juice squeezed
  • ¾ cup (175 ml) water
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ½ tsp ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 2 cloves (optional)

Directions

  1. Wash, peel and core apples (I keep the skin on and don’t mind the extra texture and nutrients).
  2. Chop apples up roughly and place in a medium size saucepan.
  3. Mix in the lemon juice, water and spices.
  4. Bring to a boil then simmer gently for 10-15mins of until apples are soft.
  5. Drain the apples in a colander and remove the cloves. You can save the apple water for smoothies.
  6. Add the drained apples to a blender and blend until a smooth consistency forms. You can also use a bar mixer to blend apples.
  7. Place in an air-tight container in the fridge for up to 5 days or freeze.
