Edible Skincare: Post-Sun Face Mask

By: Abigail Hueber

Summer is here…and so is the sun.

A sun-kissed glow is a great feeling. However, without proper protection (cough sunscreen), our glow can quickly turn into an overdose of sunshine. The result: dry, red, cracked or even pealing skin—yikes! Sun exposure is the number one driver of premature skin aging. The best ways to prevent over exposure to the sun is to use a daily SPF of 30 and cover your face with a hat or sit in the shade…or all three! But let’s be honest: We are all guilty over a little overindulgence every once in a while. When the sun strikes, how can we nourish our skin to bounce back?

Hydration is the word!

The best treatment for irritated, red, sunburned skin is gentle hydration. It can be tempting to scrub away that flaking skin but avoid the urge. Your skin needs a little TLC to heal, not more torture!

So take a break from the sun and blend up this SOSkin Face Mask made from a combination of cucumber, honey and avocado. These three ingredients nourish your skin with vitamin C to stimulate collagen production, B vitamins to increase skins moisture retention, vitamin E to reduce effects of UVA/UVB exposure, healthy fats to plump dehydrated skin and a plethora of other phytonutrients that calm and sooth irritated skin.

SOSkin Face Mask Ingredients:

  • 2 tbsp cucumber juice (juice of 1/4 cucumber)
  • 1/4 avocado
  • 2 tbsp honey

Bonus: Slice off two pieces of cucumber to cover your eyes while you apply the mask.

  1. Mash avocado in a small bowl until smooth.
  2. Mix in honey and cucumber juice until smooth.
  3. Wash face and neck with a gentle cleanser and pat dry with a towel.
  4. Lie down with the towel under your head and shoulders (to catch any drips!).
  5. Using your fingers, paint a generous layer of the face mask mixture onto your face, making sure to include your neck and chest.
  6. Place your cucumber slices on your eyes, lie back and let these power-packed ingredients save your skin!
  7. After 5-10 minutes, gently rinse off face mask with cool water and a damp washcloth.
  8. Finally apply a soothing face oil and follow with a thick face lotion to seal in that hydrating glow!

All in all, this SOSkin Face Mask is the ultimate solution to getting your glow back!
