IBS/Irritable Bowel Syndrome

IBSIrritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a disorder that affects the motility (muscle contractions) of the large intestine (also called the colon). IBS, sometimes referred to as “spastic colon” or “nervous colitis,” is not characterized by visible intestinal inflammation and may be closely linked to nerves and emotions as well as stress. IBS can cause cramping, diarrhea, abdominal pain, bloating, gas, constipation and general discomfort.



Foods/Choices to Include:

  • Maintain adequate hydration (8-10, 8 oz glasses of water daily)
  • Eat small and frequent meals
  • Gluten free grains/bread: Quinoa, teff, buckwheat, brown/white rice, arrowroot, millet
  • Lean and low-fat protein: Animal and plant-based (grass-fed beef, poultry, fatty fish- salmon), non-GMO tofu
  • Lower fiber produce: Go light on vegetables with lots of roughage (kale, lettuces, cruciferous vegetables); try cooking vegetables to reduce the fiber amount
  • Produce to include: artichoke, bean sprouts/shoots, boy choy, carrot, celery, endive, ginger, green beans, lettuce, olives, parsnip, sweet potato, pumpkin, red bell pepper, Swiss chard, spinach, summer squash, zucchini, tomato, turnip, banana, blueberries, cantaloupe, cranberries, grape, grapefruit, honeydew, kiwifruit, lemon, lime, orange, raspberries, strawberries
  • Healthy fats: Unprocessed and unrefined oils (olive oil), soft nuts including cashews, nut butter, fatty fish-salmon

Foods/Choices to Avoid:

  • Milk and dairy, including cheese
  • Very high fiber grains and cereals: Wheat bran or processed foods with added high fibers Gluten/wheat & rye
  • Raw cruciferous vegetables: Broccoli and cauliflower, asparagus, cabbage, Brussels sprouts
  • Variety of vegetables & fruits: dandelion, leek, shallot, onion, eggplant, apples, pears, plum, peach, prune, nectarine, apricot, avocado, green pepper, mushroom, corn, watermelon, garlic
  • Sugary foods: High fructose corn syrup, dried fruit, honey, artificial sweeteners and high sugar foods (even healthier ones like honey, maple syrup)
  • Beans and lentils
  • Caffeine and alcohol
  • Fried foods
  • Conventional grain fed meats
  • Chocolate
  • Condiments: ketchup, relish, soy sauce
