Darrell No Longer Needs His Diabetes Meds – Reboot Profile

Name: Darrell P.
Age: 58
Location: Puyallup, Washington
Reboot: 60 day juice fast
Pre-fast: Diabetic on oral medication & insulin.
Post-fast: Off all medications including insulin.
HOW DID YOU LEARN ABOUT REBOOT YOUR LIFE?
From the documentary Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead. But let me explain….
A couple of weeks before Easter (2012) my wife told me she thought we should buy a juicer. The juicer came the Tuesday before Easter, Thursday my wife asked me if I was going to open the juicer. It sure was a lot larger and heavier than I expected. Now what? I needed to find some juice recipes. I went online and searched for something to juice and ended up on the Breville website which linked to Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead. The title sounded interesting so I watched the documentary…then I watched it again. I’d never even heard of a juice fast before.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO DO A REBOOT?
Joe’s gut, it was the same size as mine! Watching Joe and Phil’s transformation and being healed before the viewer’s eyes definitely was inspiring. And for both of them to open up their life for the whole world to see was/is incredible. It has not only inspired me but just look at the people worldwide that have been inspired too. And not just those of us that have a hundred or more pounds to lose, but people are inspired to just eat a more healthy diet.
HOW DID THE REBOOT GO FOR YOU?
The first several days were horrible due to the withdrawal from coffee. And on top of the coffee withdrawals, I started my 60 day fast the day after Easter. Thinking I’d have one last day of eating whatever I wanted, I ate myself stupid! I wish I knew then what I know now, I could have saved myself a lot of pain.
After the first 3-4 days, a funny thing started to happen, I started feeling wonderful! No hunger pains, energy level extremely high, little aches and pains that had bothered me for years started to go away and the first few weeks the weight loss was incredible.
For years I’d come home from work, hit the recliner and that’s where I’d be until it was time for bed. All of a sudden I was keeping myself busy. I also started doing a brisk 30 minute walk during my lunch hour at work.
DID YOU HAVE ANY NOTABLE HEALTH OR PHYSICAL IMPROVEMENTS?
Well, the weight loss was certainly a notable health improvement because I believe if I’d kept eating like I had been and not exercising I was headed for a very early grave. But what happened with my diabetes was nothing short of miraculous.
I had been diagnosed as diabetic about 9 years earlier. I was put on an oral medication which worked well for a couple of years. As time went on, my diabetes got worse and my orals were increased until I was maxed out on the diabetes medication Actos. I maintained on this dosage for a few years and then my diabetes took another turn, and in addition to the Actos I was prescribed Lantus, a 24 hour insulin. I started with 10 units of insulin a day and some months later had to increase it to 20 units a day, then 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, until I was finally shooting 80 units a day and my diabetes was still getting worse. I knew I was getting close to having to either switch, or add, regular insulin to my daily diabetes medications.
Day 3 was the last day I took my insulin. Day 14 was the last day I took my oral medication.
I have also been using a CPAP machine for sleep apnea for several years and over the course of the Reboot, I started to notice my machine was delivering too much air. The Monday after my Reboot, I had an appointment to get a new CPAP machine. After talking to the technician it was decided that my air delivery would be reduced by almost half. I have hope that by the time I reach my goal weight I will no longer have sleep apnea.
WHAT WAS THE TOUGHEST PART OF THE REBOOT?
Even though I lost exactly 64 pounds in 60 days, the hardest parts for me were the few weight loss plateaus I hit along the way. There was a few times during my 60 day fast when the scale wouldn’t move for 2 or 3 days in a row. And twice during the fast I even gained a pound or so. For me, these were the toughest things to deal with.
WHAT HABITS HAVE YOU MAINTAINED AS PART OF YOUR EVERYDAY LIFE?
My diet is now vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, sprouts and juice. I continue to feel fantastic and I WILL reach my goal weight of between 190-200 pounds over the next several months. I’m still walking, feel fantastic, energy level is still high and my glucose level continues to be that of a non-diabetic. Of course, only time will tell if my diabetes can be controlled with the weight loss, healthy eating and exercise, but I have no plans to return to my old eating habits. For me, this is forever!
WHAT IS YOUR LASTING IMPRESSION OF THE REBOOT?
Over the past 20 years I have done every diet ever devised. They all failed. The Reboot for me was fast, healthy, healing and life-changing. I have a newfound love of fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and sprouts…can’t forget the sprouts! A Reboot works. It’s just that simple.
I will be forever grateful to Joe, Siong, Phil, Bear, and all the other people in FSND for having the courage to share their lives with the world. Juice On!

Incredibly Inspiring story in our latest #RebootProfile – Thanks for sharing your story Darrell! http://t.co/81Jb0iSh
Thank you Joe for the inspiration!
A truly inspiring story.
Was surprised, however, that Darrell said his toughest experience was the weight loss plateaus. This is because when people his size dive into a detox cleanse and lose weight so fast, there’s often an accompanying “detox effect”.
The detox effect occurs when too many toxins are being released from fat storage and elsewhere for the organs of elimination, like the liver, to process. The result can be fatigue, headaches, and the like.
If interested, I addressed this in a post called, “The Reboot Diet and the Detox Effect”: http://wp.me/pA04z-MQ
Note mention of the Detox Bath. It can be really helpful and help you stay on your detox path.
Yep.

Amazing!!!
Awesome, inspiring, and more proof that the Reboot really does work. I love it!! Congrats, Darrell! It jump-started my now 53lbs. weight loss too, and just as you said, gave me a love for fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and sprouts. I have kept the weight off for almost a year, and am living the healthy happy life I’d always wanted.
I am inspired by your story Darrell. I am also diabetic and overweight. I was diagnosed type 2 at only 29.
I am currently pregnant, but once I am done and recovered I will be starting a juice fast as well. Reading your story has helped me see that it can be done, and I can get healthy for myself and my children.
Thank you for your story!
Thank you Mary!
wonderful story Darrell – so inspiring
I’m so looking forward to doing this!
Inspiring! http://t.co/vaNYgxJR

Congratulations Darrell. You are looking good! Thank you for sharing.
Thank you!
Today is day two, after watching fat, sick and nearly dead, I was convinced that all my medical problems were the same as Joe and Phil’s. I take pills for all my ills, depression, diabetes, reflux, high cholesterol, have constant aches and pains. My 12 year old son watch the program with me, and wanted to juice, so I went to the basement and pulled out a jucier I had purchasesd years ago, and juiced all the fruits and vegetales I had. We had our glasses of juice and he wanted more, and wanted to go to the store and get more veggies and fruit. Well, the next morning I had lost 2 pounds! I had four bowel movements and slept well. Wow that’s just the first night!
You look great Darrell, thanks for sharing and keep on Juicing!
Thanks Beebe!
Could somebody give me a call on my cell ? 317-407-8007. I”m not sure how the plans work. They don’t seem to be Juice but look like meals that I would prepare and set down and eat off a salad plate. So if you are juicing and having success please give me a call and help me out. Jim
@JimSteve, what is your email?
@Darrell
Whats your email man, I have a few Q’s I’d like to ask if thats cool
Darrell — Did you eat anything during the 60 day reboot? Did you have enough cholesterol during this time? How often did you exercise??
SO many questions… I am on day 3 and want to make sure I will be cool during the way
Well, I have beenon for a week and have not lostan ounce? Feel awful! Problems going to the bathroom. can’t breathe, walk, exercise….50 lbs overweight. severe pain- stomach, private, bowels. ready to go to the horsepital…
Inspiring Darrell! Keep it up and I pray your diabetes will eventually be a thing of the past. You have a testimony that will help others find the health they thought was not within reach. Yes…Juice on!
Darrell, Great story! You definately got me motivated!
Darrell, thank you for sharing
OMG, Darell, we have the same situation but the only difference is that I havent controlled the diabetes at all and my Lantus is only 35 units at bedtime only, so with us having diabetes I was told not to use fruits , if you could help me I would appreciate it, let me know how you did it recipes you followed what you ate, etc. (My motto is each one teach one.)
natrgrl67, hope to hear from you……
naturgrl67, whoever told you not to juice is wrong. Stick to 80-20 veggies & fruits. As far as recipes….I just try to juice different colored stuff. Today is the start of round 2 for me. Spinach & kale will be two veggies I use in all my juices and then I’ll be adding other fruits and veggies like carrots, apples, lemons, chard. Try different things and see what you like.
* not to juice fruits
fantastic you are also and inspiration
Thanks for sharing your story. It is amazing how one man’s journey has touched the lives of so many people that he never even met, or may never meet. You look great! I am a diabetic also. I look forward to getting better. I just want to be healthy. I can’t wait to get started.
how much did you weigh at the beginning?
Sylvia, I weighed 286.0 on day one and 222.0 on the morning of day 61.
Thank you for the inspiration! I am on day 59 of my first Reboot and I feel marvelous! I can’t wait to do my “final” weigh-in (day 57 showed 66.2-lbs. gone!) before moving on to Phase Two. Thanks to Joe, Siong, Phil, Bear, crew, friends and family for the amazing inspiration that is FSND! GROUP HUG and Juice On, people! (p.s. my insulin injections have been reduced to 20% of previous requirements — I am hoping and praying for 0% insulin required as I get closer to my goal.)
Thanks Darrell for sharing, I have a strong family history of Diabetes and am one lab away from being diagnosed myself. My Daughter saw Joe’s video the other day and came home and told me about it. We got a juicer yesterday and started juicing today, wish us luck.
Hi Jean,
I’m just catching up to my busy schedule. How are you doing now that it’s been 30 days post fast?
Thanks for sharing! Any tips on making the mean green more palatable? I am on day 3 and it is TOUGH to make it go down. =)
Add an apple
Darrell, Thank you for sharing your story, I too am diabetic, and on pills right now. I want to get healthy, and get off the medication. I began juicing today, but I also made vegetable soup to help me get through the day. As a diabetic, did you ever feel weak, shaky, or sick from lack of food? Can you post your weekly juicing recipes?
Hi Sandy,
Sorry I’ve been absent for a while. Actually I never felt weak/shaky or sick during my 60 day fast. Hungry? Yeah…for the first couple of days. By day 4 all the hunger feelings were gone. As far as juicing recipes…I guess I was pretty boring. Every batch of juice I made had 1 large bunch of spinach, 1 large bunch of kale, 1-2 Granny Smith apples, 3-4 large carrots, and most of the time I’d throw in a lemon (pealed). After those veggies and fruits I’d just throw in what I had in the fridge…maybe a quarter head of cabbage, a couple of tomatoes, grapes, onions, beat greens, collard greens, turnip greens, mustard greens.
The first 30 days I used a lot of English cucumbers but I kind of grew tired of the strong taste. When I did use the cucumber I’d juice the whole thing…lots of juice. Once on a while I’d pick up a watermelon too and juice some of that.
Boring huh? But it worked and I never felt better! Hope that helps!!
Can you share how you did the 60 day juice fast? I am newly dx diabetic and want to get off the medications. I also have a leaky gut, suffer from a lot of inflammation symptoms. I printed off the recipes for a 3 day reboot to start somewhere.. Thanks so much for sharing.
Hi twisted,
Um….well….it was 60 days of juice only. I tried to stay as close as I could to 80% veggies and 20% fruits. At least 64 oz. a day and more if I felt my energy level dropping. As far as what I juiced you can read my reply to Sandy above. Are you on oral diabetic meds and or insulin?
In the reboot posts, Darrell did you only juice for 60 days, how did you know how much and when to juice?
Sorry I guess I asked a duplicate question. So I just want to make sure I am doing the right thing. I have only watched the video. Today is my first day. I had a lot of vegetable juice with a little fruit.
debm79,
I drank a minimum of 64 oz of juice a day…only juice no food. I also drank at least that much or more of filtered water. I would drink 16 oz 4 times a day but many days I drank a little more…maybe an additional 12-16 oz.
It’s great that some Rebooters can inspire the rest of us given how much they’ve improved through juicing.
I’ve pretty much always have been in shape and healthy. Nonetheless, ever since college I’ve been a juicer, but an irregular one. Joe Cross’ documentary got me back in gear and I now juice nearly every day — even grow many of the ingredients in my garden.
Anyone who is still unsure about this or want some details re recipe and types of juicers can read my story, “My Kick-Ass Rebooter Juice Habit” here: http://bit.ly/PIb4eJ
Wow…. This is really inspirational… I intend to keep it going.
I’m sooo glad my son shared this site!! I will be here often, thanks for sharing.
I saw the movie and bought a juicer I started juicing fast on 1/12/2013 I have committed to a 60 day fast and in the first 2 days i lost 18 pounds it has slowed down to a couple pounds a day which is still very cool I was 301 when I started and my goal weight is 180 I will keep posting my results and thank you for showing the world a healthy way to transform our lives. Jim Barry Syracuse, NY
Wow. Amazing results Darrell. My husband and I watched the movie today and are amazed and inspired. We buy a juicer tomorrow!
Hi Darrell, I was just curious how you were able to do the juice fast without complications with your diabetes? I am a Type 2 diabetic and unsure where to start with the juicing process. I bought this thing called a nutri-bullet but Im not sure if it is as good as e regular juicer or not? How did you avoid your blood glucose levels spiking etc? How did you go without wanting to eat everything for the first few days? I started drinking these already made juices but Im not sure if they are safe or not? Please help me get this juicing thing started, Im anxious to become a healthier and happier person. Im 5’11″ and weigh in at 211lbs. I know thats not alot compared to most people but its still an unhealthy weight for me to be carrying around.
