Danielle M. Turned to Juice to Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle after Breast Cancer

Name: Danielle M.
Age:  34
Location:  Bergen County, New Jersey
Reboot: 15-Day Classic Reboot
Health Improvements: I’ve always been at a healthy weight but I did the Reboot Program for health maintenance and nutritional benefits because I had surgery twice, 33 radiation treatments, and opted against Chemo and Tamoxifen for Stage II Breast Cancer Treatment in 2009. I was not on any medications at the time of my Reboot, and am still not – 3 years later. I try to use the farmer’s market as my pharmacy as much as I can, and take vitamins and supplements under the care of a physician, unless my life depends on it.

How did you learn about Reboot Your Life?
My local Whole Foods Market was featuring the movie “Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead” with an appearance from Joe.

What inspired you to do a Reboot?
A Breast Cancer diagnosis at 31, with no genetic predisposition inspired me to change my lifestyle and led me to do a Reboot. When I saw the movie, I had the opportunity to meet and talk to Joe. After telling him my story, he gave me a pep talk, a huge hug and shared that his mother was also a Survivor – that sealed the deal for me.

I was shocked to find out that 90% of Cancer is caused by lifestyle and environmental factors, while only about 10% is genetic. I had no family history. I always thought I was healthy and this forced me to take a look at the choices I made every day, most importantly what I was putting in and on my body. I realized that lifestyle factors such as an organic plant-based diet, juicing, vitamins, exercise, natural cosmetics and body care products, non-toxic cleaning products, stress levels, sleep habits, emotional and spiritual well-being, etc. were all things in my control, when everything seemed so out of control.

I was already living a really healthy lifestyle for about a year and a half, when I did the Reboot, but diet and juicing were what I struggled with most. I had to reprogram my mind and my taste buds to find new, healthy, foods instead of the packaged stuff I’d somehow grown accustomed to. I couldn’t seem to find vegan / vegetarian recipes along that didn’t contain a ton of sugar, processed flour and soy, and was bored with the juicing recipes I had. I’d hit a plateau and needed motivation, and the Reboot seemed to be exactly what I needed.

How did the experience go for you?
Nobody said it would be easy, they just told me it would be worth it. And they were right! I definitely had my moments, but overall my experience was amazing! Luckily, I had no Detox symptoms, which was an indication that what I was already doing was working – and that confirmation was so important! I had always wanted to do a juice cleanse after Cancer, but didn’t think I had the courage or the discipline to do it for more than a day. So, the Reboot helped me overcome a major emotional hurdle.

Doing a Reboot also helped me feel a sense of community among like-minded people. I found the Groups and Forums unbelievably beneficial in the sense that I realized I wasn’t in this alone. I also knew there was power in numbers and asked Fans from my blog, The Glamorganic Goddess Blog, Facebook & Twitter Pages to join my boyfriend, sister-in-law and I on our juicing journey. The overwhelming amount of community support was what kept me going when I wanted to give up!

Did you have any notable health or physical improvements?
In addition to trying to prevent Cancer from coming back, I also had a history of Hypothyroidism. My doctors and I had put any medication for this on hold until I figured out how to balance my hormones post Cancer. On my Reboo, I tried to juice more greens than anything else in order to avoid some of the high glycemic fruits and veggies, and didn’t realize it might affect my thyroid. I actually gained 4 lbs. during the Juice Fast portion on the 15-Day Plan. I freaked out, emailed Stacy Kennedy (Reboot Nutritionist) and she recommended that I watch the amount of raw cruciferous greens in my juices going forward, and it worked. I still juice them occasionally and focus on eating them cooked as much as possible.

What was the toughest part about the Reboot experience?
The toughest part for me, an Italian Jersey-girl was giving up the oils, nuts and grains in the first 5 and the last 5 days. I didn’t even know it was possible to cook veggies without Olive Oil. Haha.

What habits have you maintained and kept a part of your everyday life?
I was so inspired by the movie and the Reboot that I continue to have a juice or smoothie for breakfast and / or at least one other raw meal a day, to benefit from the live enzymes – which are vitally important for healing and prevention. As a result, we also began to seek out more locally sourced food from ethical farms, started eating in season since it’s more affordable, and began to seriously prepare plant-based meals on a regular basis. The Reboot has really helped me make that connection with where our food comes from and literally brought the farm to the fork for me.

What is your lasting impression of the Reboot experience?
I’ve hardly ever felt such a sense of accomplishment when it came to my health, and definitely see another Reboot in my future! I loved that I took chances and got to try so many fruits and veggies I’d never even seen, heard of or had with the Reboot Recipes and I used my juicer so much that I contemplated bedazzling flames on the sides! I just felt better mentally and physically! Very few things like this get my stamp of approval, but the Reboot is one of them. I recommend the movie and the program to everyone regardless of the state of their health… everyone can benefit and that’s what makes this so great! I will be forever grateful to Joe for sharing his story, and allowing us to go on this journey to health with him!
