Study Nutrition

“When I first set out on my sixty-day reboot and began my journey back to health, I could never have foreseen just how far it would take me. It was through making Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead and launching Reboot with Joe that I discovered a passion to communicate what I’ve learned so far on my journey to others who are also suffering.

Today more and more of us are struggling with obesity, diabetes, chronic headaches, depression, digestive problems, insomnia, and more – all of which can be directly linked to what we are putting into our bodies in the way of food and drink.
How did I go from fat, sick, and nearly dead to pretty damn healthy and happy? Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead offers a simple solution to a serious problem: we are not eating the right foods – and it’s killing us.

We need to be eating more fruits and vegetables. The film is really a call to action for all of us to look at how we eat and live our lives. After a lifetime of excess, I was able to lose 100 lbs., address a chronic and painful disease, and rediscover my vitality – all by changing my diet.

We all need to nourish, not simply feed, our bodies – and we need to learn how to do so.”

Overfed but undernourished

Much of the food we eat today would be unrecognizable to our great grandparents; we have undergone a nutrition transition from traditional diets based mostly on whole foods to a diet full of packaged foods. 75% of world food sales today involve processed foods. They are abundant, cheap, designed to taste great, and available 24/7 – but these benefits come at a cost. As a society we are overfed but undernourished.

Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food

Hippocrates knew it back in 431 B.C. and centuries later clinical research continues to confirm the immense impact of food on our health. The food we eat impacts our weight, our energy levels, and our health. Diet is crucial in the prevention and management of chronic disease, but in the face of complex and often contradictory information about what constitutes healthy eating, trying to make the right choices can feel overwhelming. For many people today it is hard to know what to eat.

“In less than three years my film has been seen by almost 10 million people, and as a result over 185 million glasses of fresh juice have been consumed, more than 12.4 million pounds of weight have been lost, and over 110,000 people have been able to get off medication. Knowing that it has helped so many people to reboot their lives and to feel healthy and happy is both humbling and inspiring.

Every day I receive emails, Facebook messages and tweets from people who say they have been inspired by my story to reclaim their health and to transform their lives. Experiencing these changes themselves, they want to do the same for their friends and family – and many of them ask me for advice about how they can learn more about nutrition, and how they can help others reclaim their health and vitality. One way to do this is to become a Certified Health Coach through a school called The Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN).

In the words of my friend Joshua Rosenthal, the founder of the school, “For more than 20 years, at IIN we have educated students on the vital importance of true nourishment. In turn, our Health Coaches have gone on to educate tens of thousands more people. Together, we have created a ripple effect that is bringing health and happiness to the world.”

I spoke to students and alumni at the IIN conference earlier this year, and shared the impact of my movie and the Reboot movement. My message to these current and future Health Coaches was one of thanks. Health Coaches have helped me spread this story, by being champions of the message that you can change your life, and can empower others. Together we are making a difference.
